Even greater, continuing eco-friendly driving habits year-round will have a huge impacton our communities."Celebrating the 41st anniversary of the Earth Day ini-tiative, Young Drivers of Canada has put together a top 10list of ways drivers can go green. Plan your trips to consolidate several into one andtravel in a logical order. When approaching a red light, slow down early tosave fuel for you and all the vehicles following. The cumu-lative saving is huge. Idling your engine more than 10 seconds wastes fuel.*Turn off the engine, unless you are at risk of collision. Avoid heavy acceleration and heavy braking as thisstyle of driving uses up to 39 per cent more fuel.* In slower traffic, leave your windows down or useyour vents. For freeway driving, open windows create moredrag, so roll them up. When parking, pull in and through parkingspots. Starting up forward uses less fuel. Use the lane of least resistance, which is the lane thathas the best flow, the best view and the least risk. You willavoid stopping or unnecessary slowing. Keep your brakes in good working condition. Poorbrakes burn more fuel and are a major safety concern. Make sure your vehicle is properly tuned. Check yourowner's manual to see how often your air and fuel filtershould be changed. Check your tire pressure at least once a month, evenif you use Hydrogen in your tires. Tire pressure fluctuateswith the outside temperature.
