thursday november 23 1972 the tribune pae 19 stouffville players look back is dramatic step forward by sheila mcleod stouffville lets establish right off that john osbornes look back in anger is a demanding play its no escapist fare it rips the guts out of the actors and leaves the audience limp lets establish that the stouff ville players are solidly credited for going out on such a prickly limb and deserve unreserved applause for doing it with considerable finesse the plot of look back in anger is secondary the play could very well make a successful audio presentation the dialogue is volatile harshly humorous bitingly bitter and the lead actor carries the lead of the authors poetic outflow dennis empson as jimmy put blood sweat and tears into this part its a pity too many distracting gestures and facial expressions marred an otherwise believable and intense per formance director matthew ahem may be faulted for it being so uncompromisingly high keyed and fast paced that it did not allow for full ebb and flow of drama or dialogue nazneen sadiqs interpretation of alison rates nothing but bravos at times it was a relief to leave the action at centre stage and watch the drama being reflected more subtly on her face she expressed moods of anguished restraint to despair with excellent control and the memory lingers on in comparison patty creets por trayal of helena lacked animation and a stilted delivery detracted from spontaneous action on stage gary peterman though too refined in appearance and voice for the scruffy little welshman he was supposed to charac terize gave a solid performance as cliff his tenuous relation ship with each of the main characters was well defined in subtle shifts of mood in a successful vignette frank steele convincingly in terpreted the voice and mannerisms of an elderly gentleman in a skilful charac terization of alisons father make up throughout was realistic and the players old stage flats with some ad ditional painted cracks lent them selves perfectly to the set a room in need of repair the local club may have bucked the tastes of stouffville play goers a very compact group in presenting look back in anger but no drama group worth its grease paint should be cowinea by public tastes it must plumb its own depths this time the players floundered a little lets establish it was worth the ex periment with look back the club took a step forward retired machinist seeks reeveship wm bill simpson match plowman judge uxbridge twp ernie weinhold a retired machinist r r 1 claremont is seeking the reeveship in
