page 10 the tribune thursday november 23 1972 stouffville commuter tremendous success it yf bv donald m deacon mppyork centre york centre a letter to one of the toronto newspapers recently caught my eye in it a commuter from shanty bay near barrie was telling how gratified he was to be able to sit in the new barrie to toronto commuter train on the morning of the sudden snowstorm last week and travel down to work in comfort trying manfully not to gloat as the train sped smoothly past the badly stalled and backed up traffic on the roads as a con sequence he arrived at work on time relaxed and with his blood pressure at its normal level he also mentioned that a newly instituted commuter service that morning was running at near full capacity it doesnt surprise me at all commuter trains can and will be a success whenever they provide a reasonable and con venient alternative to cars but i must stress the word convenient the stouffville streak has proved an enormous success thus proving wrong those railroad pundits who felt that com muter service would not be well patronized but i believe that the line could carry at least double the commuter traffic if there were more of a service for example not everyone has to arrive downtown at 8 oclock in the morning or for that matter to make the supreme sacrifice of catching a train as early as 7 oclock i am sure that a second train slated to arrive at union station at 835 or 840 would prove an instant success in addition a second train leaving toronto at night at possibly 615 or 620 would be a boon to the many workers who like myself for in stance generally stay around the office clearing up odds and ends until six oclock in addition a reasonable bus service for the hours in bet ween the peak travel times should be provided i sometimes wonder if we in canada realize the intangible losses that we suffer from our present method of car dominated com muting how many man hours are lost how many wrong decisions are made how many dollars are wasted because people are arriving at work pent up already fatigued and generally in a low frame of mind from the problems of wrestling with big city traffic for the previous hour and who knows there might be a few less domestic arguments in the evenings if husbands could arrive home relaxed after a oleasant train journey rather than fighting the evening rush hour no i dont think commuter travel is the magical cure all for canadas troubles ranging from a high divorce rate down to bunions but in a more serious vein i do think that it is up to us as citizens and com muters to push for an enlarged and more convenient commuter system i should be interested to hear your views on this matter both for and against new ball jackets greenwood team bloomington road made legal york region it in 1966 in a bvlaw is official and legal bloomington road is now bloomington road at regional council nov 9 a bylaw was enacted to bring this about after an in tensive search through old legislation revealed that no part of the road between hwy 47 and bathurst st had been legally named despite signs at its intersections on hwy 48 don mills rd and yonge st indicating that it is bloomington road in a report from regional solicitor edward oakes it was explained that the original bloomington road the 2 mile stretch between hwys 47 and 48 was assumed by the county designating it county road no 40 later additions were legally referred to as ex tension of county road no 40 the appelaljon bloomington appears to have been a descriptive name only to add to the con fusion in parts of some municipalities it was referred to as cfite sideroad aurora and richmond hill or eversley sideroad king township however represen tatives of all these areas have finally agreed
