community newspapers association and ontario weekly news papers association second class mail registration number cs96 editorial building pattern uneconomical both stouffville and markham and particularly the latter are being over run with small uneconomical plazas in addition to making an unattractive hodgepodge of business streets they attract unsound business ventures which very often have a short life in the com munity markham has a number of such blocks while stouffville has one and is planning a second naturally the developer is anxious to divide the space into as many small units as possible with rents running at fantastic levels up to a thousand dollars a month in markham planning boards have so far gone along with this chopped up system while in markham what is even more surprising is that larger businesses are being restricted we do not deny the practicability of some small stores but only where some socalled neighborhood shopping is dictated through a residential develop ment far removed from any other business outlets both towns are guilty of allowing these mickeymouse plazas to spring up where there is no direct need the south side of no 7 highway in markham is now commonly known as the strip and presents anything but an attractive picture with its conglomeration of varied businesses markham planning board has taken a very freewheeling attitude towards anyone who would open a business in this area and we see the result stouffville will face this problem more severely in the next two or three years and should take into account the attractiveness and soundness of the businesses they let in not just the number of tax bills that can be produced when in doubt step out a letter from a ballantrae area resident has fanned the flames of a fire that has been smouldering now for many months it concerns the vla felray development and the financial interest if any retained in the property by town councillor herb simpson the conflict allegation is not new there were rumblings of discontent when mr simpson accepted the ward nomination and was later acclaimed back in 1970 most people knew then that the councillorelect once owned much of the land where the first phase of the felray subdivision is located and mr simpson himselfnever attempted to conceal this fact realizing what could occur in such a situation the councillor would have been wise to withdraw himself from all discussion on the issue both in planning committee and open council if indeed he did the minutes of meetings will so record if he didnt then a full explanation is required the arenas in good hands whenever winter sports are discussed in stouffville the arena comes in for more than its fair share of hard knocks it bore the brunt of a few low blows last week when the minor hockey association held its preseason meeting in latcham hall through the years these people who continually expound on the need and the advantage of a communityowned rink seldom if ever explain what overall benefits they expect to derive from such an operation they seem to feel that because an arena is townowned and townoperated the costs will be less and perhaps on an individual basis they are right registration fees for hockey players and figure skaters might possibly be reduced but the overall expense would not drop but more than likely increase if the lesson learned in other areas holds true here therefore the municipality would be called on to subsidize the project through taxation and the incentive to raise funds through other endeavors would be lost however the taking over of the rinks operation is a future consideration lets consider the present to buy the building complete would cost an estimated 150000 this would require a debenture covering a period of at least ten years and thats not all the ice plant now 22 years old must some day be replaced this could cost another 50000 to build a new arena as some have also suggested would mean an ex penditure of at least 500000 as you can see the cost from any angle would be considerable to pur chase it to maintain it and to operate it we say stouffville should be so lucky that the rink is not our own history in action it was history in action at brougham oncemighty steam engine is bill wood of i saturday no stranger to the controls of the uxbridge editor 9 mail dear sir i am enclosing a copy of a letter sent by me to mr h mitchell chief land acquisition officer dept of treasury and economics parliament bldgs toronto it concerns the acquisition of land for the new city south of the proposed international airport i consider this a very important matter so much so that i would like to see someone organize a committee to obtain suggested names for this new community eg cedar- wood or anything other than north pickering i would be pleased to help out any way i can mrs margo weston 71 kennebec cresc rexdale 601 ont a copy of mrs westons letter is published in part as follows dear sir last may i wrote to you concerning the name of the new city to be constructed south of the proposed airport bloomington public school ss no 10 whitchurch 1932 former pupils of bloomington public school ss no 10 whit church twp may recall many of the names and a few of the faces in this photo the year is 1932 the teacher centrerear is mr stan rose the students arerear row left to right lillian tranmer carl reesor delbert gilbert george vaughan gordon brown i requested that it be called cedar- wood or that property owners in the area be given an opportunity to vote on this very important condition in your reply you said that the name north pickering community develop ment project was merely an interim description and was not intended to be the name of the new municipality you also requested receiving thoughts and ideas from myself and from other interested persons in making the selection of a name for the new city this is very reassuring but the time has now come to drop the undistinguished name north pickering before it sticks and to arrange a plebiscite for the people to speak their wishes freely dear jim having had the occasion to visit malton airport recently the obvious over crowding of buildings calls for some kind of action i am suggesting that every person entering the airport grounds be charged 5 this could be refunded with the purchase of an airline ticket while i deplore the gradual removal of local government by queens park ie regional assessment regional policing and regional school systems all of them inefficient and expensive as well as that unbelievable bill passed recently whereby the government can expropriate property and then do as it pleases with it yet at least one davis decision called for support and commendation that was a plan whereby greedy toronto was to be surrounded by a greenbelt to keep it from choking itself to death now the same government rather than risk ill will in the premiers own riding has done a complete aboutface and plans to build a new city next to the new airport if brampton objects so should pickering the government is supposedly moving to restrict land ownership to canadian citizens there is reported to be one township northeast of lake simcoe almost wholly foreign owned perhaps this would be a good place to build an airport after present owners were paid a decent price certainly it will never be good agricultural land and fast com munication service could be arranged at low cost if the trudeau government is as much with it as they have tried to make us believe they should pay closer attention to the attitudes of the young voters who mother nature held a reunion by jim thomas mother nature held a family reunion last weekend and all of her children through several generations were there from the very very young to the very very old plus hundreds of inbetweens the selected site west of the brock road between pickering concessions 8 and 9 was perfect for the occasion so was the weather however the chosen name earth days left me cold yes i attended sunday but only out of curiosity expecting to see dozens of tiny mole men with shovels and spades taking away samples of pickering soil but it wasnt like that at all these were people not ordinary people by stouffville standards but people just the same they are people looking for something and they seem to see it in the strum of a guitar the lyrics of a song the trees the grass and a trickling stream progress to them in the form of expressways apartments subdivisions and airports is a dirty word and while commonly referred to as freaks and weirdos their numbers are growing growing so fast in fact that we of the square society like it or not are being forced to give them a listen its just possible although we may hate to admit it that in their own simple wayi these folks do have something sensible to say it was about 2 pm when i arrived sunday and already the duffin creek valley land was a sea of humanity but the flood crest had not been reached- visitors were surging through the fields in a steady stream hundreds maybe thousands who could say while the event was obviously pop organized the antiairport theme was low key the scene in that claremont district pasture field was like something from another world beer flowed freely and the smell of marijuana was in the air however the crowd despite its size was extremely orderly and the grounds extremely clean the only real distraction was a group of comely maidens and their boyfriends who splashed about in the buff they paid no heed to the crowd around and the crowd paid no heed to them you see when mother nature holds a reunion anything goes are more interested in preserving whats left of a health environment rather than sacrificing everything valuable to so- called progress clarion baker rr2 stouffville dear sir our hydro meter man just read our bumper sticker on our car which says airport no he remarked i live in etobicoke and i come out here to visit my parents in the proposed cedarwood area to enjoy the peace and quiet etobicoke is 5 miles from malton and the noise is unbearable maybe stouffville will become the earplug and gas mask centre of the i world this would increase the economic boom while decreasing the sonic boom l kennedy stouffville a sign in the country grill hwy 7 at brougham reads please
