ljaf tub tkibumi tliurxu july t 1971 mt joy sideroad markham town backs down on new road name m a it k h a m markham council has backed away from the proposed renaming of icth avenue mount joy sideroad this action followed a meeting july 4 when a petition was submitted by residents living in the area they were concerned about a bylaw recently read which would have renamed the street rutherford road the petition expressed strong objection to this proposal and cited shock and disbelief among the residents that they were not notified by mail the historical and emotional associations of the old name were em phasized as well as the fact that these are all residents of long standing at a quick count i see 250 or 260 names on this petition ob served mayor tony roman councillor murray henderson said he had given the matter considerable thought and concluded that changing the name would be wrong he also stated that it would be easier to leave the names of all east west roads as they are and would avoid the expense involved in changes when we took this action it was late at night said councillor bob adams it was so precipitous it was almost frivolous other councillors were in general agreement jmijhere was considerable debate over the best procedure to reverse j he earlier action eventually approval was voted for a motion put forward by councillor bud bon ner that the bylaws third reading be tabled 1 residents can be pretty well assured that this will be tabled for a long time said mayor roman he expressed ap preciation for the interest displayed by the petitioners and added i had no way of knowing there was so much interest in keeping the name councils action means that the bylaw which would give effect to the name change will never be passed unless a specific motion to do so is carried piano honors lv bettv pegg greenwood congratulations to elen disney on her success in piano at whitby ladies college helen obtained grade 8 honors in examinations set by the was told tuesday parks and recreation director bruce holdsworth reported that damage and theft during the recent holiday weekend amounted to about st 000 we report our losses to the police but nobody knows where the equipment goes and there never seem to be any charges said mr holdsworth items stolen he said include bases from baseball diamonds swings and other equipment this has become much worse during the last two months he stated mr holdsworth said the problem is not confined to any par ticular area but was general throughout the town bulky items such as picnic tables and garbage cans have vanished i dont know what the answer is he admitted mayor tony roman suggested that mr holdsworth draw up a list of equipment stolen or vandalized so that council might approach the york regional police on a formal basis to ask more protection the police ought to be made aware of this said the mayor they are said mr holdsworth councillor murray i lenderson observed that a pair of steel goalposts w e r e recently taken how much do those things cost he asked mr holdsworth named a price of 430 and added a pair of those posts weigh 300 pounds people cant pick them up and run you can send for the police and they make out a nice report but it happens again part of the solution mr holdsworth said was to make the public aware of what is happening its all coming out of the taxpayers pocket he observed tv stolen markham an unusually talented shoplifter is believed responsible for the disappearance of a tv set from wellington way stereo the theft occurred during business hours on
