weeks tribune and discover how some farmers in the area feel about the proposed airport it would ap pear that the majority of those speaking out in opposition to the scheme are those who moved into the district from the city in hopes of enjoying a more peaceful kind of life i also find myself in this category but in no way would i oppose the creation of more work or desire to see far mers cheated out of an opportunity that may never come their way again historical sites as important as they may seem must sooner or later bow to progress i love country living but i dont expect the world to stand still for my benefit it is a well- known fact that the northern part of pickering twp has been sadly neglected one need only look at the conditions that presently exist in the former village of both sid of airport story green river speaks up on port plan claremont to see how sidewalk and road conditions have deteriorated since the municipality took over if then it takes an airport to arbitrary tax on this and future generations of canadians they committed 1 biliion and more of public funds for the construction of an international airport in pickering township no debate a mass of technical evidence says that no new airport is required now or in the fore seeable future but on the question of the need or on whether there might be higher national priorities for the funds there had been no debate in the house of commons of canada there had been no debate in the legislature of ontario a commitment to spend at least 100 from evey man woman and child in canada was made without representation and one third of all canadians live below the poverty level i iron fist of government canadian families many of whose forebears have tilled these fertile landsfor generations are forthwith to be expropriated from their properties whether they want it or not by the iron fist of government edict other thousands in surrounding areas of beautiful ontario countryside will have their homes and hopes ruined by jet noise and pollution and other impacts from this extravagant waste of public funds brainchild of bureaucrats only an inner few cabinet ministers in the canadian and ontario governments were privy to the airport decision the federal and the provincial members from the aea where the airport is sited were told of the decision only an hour before it was made public in truth it appears that the whole scheme is the brainchild of the bureaucrats at ottawa and queens park they appear to be running the government the conservatives at ottawa are afraid to oppose for fear of alienating the conservative government at queens park the liberals at queens park are reluctant to criticize the liberal government in ottawa and so our governments have failed us danger to our democratic process people who are most outraged by this high handed government action are those whose lands would be expropriated especially since no airport is needed but they are being joined by a rapidly growing number of people and organizations from a much wider area all canada in fact people who see the danger to our democratic process and tradition in this arbitrary action of big governments in ottawa and queens park teachers housewives doctors engineers farmers laborers students the organization called people or planes is made up of teachers engineers doctors farmers housewives lawyers students laborers they are of all political parties many are leading figures in their communi ties it is a responsible organization demo cratically created from the grass roots full support is being given it by the federal mp and the provincial mpp both of whom have stated their unalterable opposition to the airport scheme members of the people or planes organization share the belief that the truly loyal subject will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures e e 1 e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e another conventional airport is obsolete people or planes
