takes care of 44 men and 35 women the plan also provides for rooms for invalid couples because someof these people will require special eareespecially those in the bedridden wing staff quarters are necessary and in addition to a suite for the super intendent there is accommodation for three senior assistants six female helpers and two male attendents to live in the building it is anticipated that a proportion of the help will come only to work by the day and provision lias been made for eight male and eight female outside workers these workers can leave their out door clothes in a locker room and change into their uniforms for their institutional work in con junction with the locker rooms there are facilities for showers basins etc the building is designed so that all residents are accommodated on one floor the architects reasons for this design were that numer ous elderly people have hurt themselves on staircases and the multifloor unit would necessitate heavier foundation construction and elevators the central portion of the build ing contains the administrative block consisting of the super intendents office board room and visitors room there is a main dining room which will seat about one hundred and fifty persons adjoining a mod ern kitchen the dining room is used by men and women who need no special care the staff have a separate dining room adjoining the kitchen the kitchen is complete with refrigeration boxes for meat dairy and vege table supplies there is an elec trically operated hoist to bring food from the kitchen storage in the basement electrically heated food trucks take food to bed patients and patients needing special care who cannot come to the main dining room there is a dishwasher potato peeler steam table automatic sheer and other modern conveniences in the kitchen above the kitchen are female staff quarters the wings winch accommodate people who need no special care and people who need partial atten tion have bedrooms which hold one two and four beds each each resident has his own locker in a locker room the bedrooms will all have individual bedside tables and storage cupboards for each residents personal effects each room has an automatic fire alarm signal system there are sitting rooms and visitors rooms in the various wings sewing space and a barber shop have boon included the bedridden wing will hold 47 building will also have a hobby room where simple crafts can be followed adjoining the main building is a boiler room and laundry the laundry is modern and complete in every respect and is designed to accommodate additional equipment should the building ever be extend ed the plan of the building was made so that the accommodation can be raised to take care of up wards of 250 people in each room there is forced ventilation the bedrooms are being furnish ed with enamelled steel beds which are being built at a special height so that old people will have no difficulty in getting in and out the special building committee is choosing attractive curtains for all the rooms the colour scheme has been laid out so that there are various room colours with match ing or complementary linoleum floors generally speaking the floors in the bedrooms are lino leum and the corridor and bath room floors are terrazzo all the windows are double glazed and weatherstripped the heating system includes three
