sanitary problems greatly affecting the health problems of the people residing in the health unit the appointment of miss verna smyth as supervisor of public health nurses fills the vacancy created some months ago by the resignation of mrs j r rhoten miss smyth who will assume her duties during july comes to the york county health unit from a years study at mcgill university montreal she is a native of st catherines and served with the rcaf during the war after which she was a member of the staff of the simcoe county health unit for two years an increasing number of health problems in the health unit area are brought to light by the wann er summer weather inspections of waste disposal systems such as septic tanks and tile beds privies and other situations resulting in complaints from citizens have increased during the last month at the same time inspections of new mobile clinic for palsied children open in sudbury eating establishments restaurants lunch counters snack bars require more time during the warmer summer weather partly because the need for better sani tation increases in the warmer weather and partly because the number of such establishments open for business is greater in the summer time the immunization program offering immunization to school children against diphtheria tet anus lockjaw and smallpox and offering the same immuniza tion to preschool children plus protection against whooping cough has been completed during june basic immunization requires three injections at about one month intervals followed by the fourth injection about six months later immunity is then maintain ed at a safe level by reinforcing booster injections about one year later followed by further re inforcing injections approximately every 5 years the york county health unit aims at having as close to 100 as possible of the children in the health unit immunized in addi tion to the figures shown above a certain proportion of the child ren in the health unit had been privately immunized by their family physicians it is customary now to use combined toxoids which minimizes the inconveni ence to the individuals being immunized it is planned to carry on a main tenance program to provide immunization against these pre ventable diseases during the next school year in order that every infant and preschool child may have the opportunity to be ade quately protected during the first year of life and in order that re inforcing doses may be provided as required throughout the child hood ages the poliomyelitis season has arrived although parents do worry about their children getting polio infantile paralysis there is no doubt that unnecessary worry and panic occurs at this time of the year if parents take all the commonsense precautions to safeguard their childrens health see that they get plenty of sleep and rest avoid excessive fatigue have proper diet and do not mix unnecessarily in crowded groups and close quarters such as meeting places and theatres dur ing the polio months of july alsy patient marie broon is a small group of highly trained personnel have begun the immense job of surveying and categorizing children afflicted with cerebral palsy at first mobile cerebral palsy clinic to be opened by ontario society for crippled children soon with scout david young at now medical contr in canada at sudbury ont the clinic headed by dr t h coffery medical director of woodeden canadas cerebral palsy centre near london ont is regarded as one of the most progressive steps ever taken in the field of training atllicted children seven of whom are born with disease in every 100000 team of 12 all from woodeden will demonstrate to parents met hods of reaching children in their o n homes and will also help teach children them selves to use faculties with which they have been provided august and september they will have done all that is possible with our present knowledge to avoid contacting poliomyelitis approximately every two years the national sanitarium associa tion brings a mass chest xray sur vey free of charge to each com munity in this part of ontario during june this years survey is providing free miniature chest x- rays for the people of the new market gormley and richvale areas several other health unit communities will be having their mass surveys during july by this use of miniature chest xrays which are relatively inexpensive and are paid by the christmas seal fund it is possible to detect early cases of tuberculosis long before the individual may suspect that he has been infected thus early steps may be taken to reduce the spread of tuberculosis in the community thereby lowering the eventual cost in terms of health as well as dollars and cents in the community at large to get the best results from these mass sur veys as close a possible to 100 of the population from the age of 12 years up should be xrayed a great deal of credit and gratitude is owing to the various local ser vice clubs and community organ izations that are preparing for and managing each local chest survey those communities not included in the survey this year will be surveyed next year vi i t
