To do so, it is asking people to submit applications for nomina- tions. Submission deadline is Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. We want to highlight the excel- lence of the arts in Oakville and encourage artists of all disciplines to submit an application, said Stacey Sinclair, chair of Jurying and Applications, in a press release. If you are not an artist yourself, but you know an excellent artist, we encourage you to nominate them. This event is a celebration of Oakvilles talent! Award categories include Visual Arts (includes photography), Literary Arts, Media Arts, Performing Arts and Young Artist (18 or younger). Each category honours a local artist that exemplifies excellence in his or her discipline. Winners receive $500, media coverage and recognition at the awards ceremo- ny. The ceremony will take place at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on May 12. Applications will be assessed on (1) artistic merit, (2) artistic mes- sage and the emotional impact, (3) originality of concept or idea (4) innovative use of the medium and (5) technical execution of the medi- um. Each year our jury is made up of arts professionals from outside the Oakville area, and they have a very difficult task selecting the award recipients from such a tal- ented pool of artists. The creativity happening in Oakville is remark- able, said Megan Whittington, executive director of the arts coun- cil, in the release. Applications are available at www.oakvillearts.com by clicking Awards Applications on the home- page. Hand delivered or mailed appli- cations can be sent to the arts councils office, located at 120 Navy St., Oakville, Ontario, L6J 2Z4.
