Halton police said the incident began at around 1 p.m. when a man, wearing a ski mask and armed with a hammer, entered the Bank of Nova Scotia, 611 Third Line, and demanded money. The man was handed an undisclosed amount of cash at which point he tried to flee the area, but was spotted by police as he left the bank. A short foot chase followed, but the suspect was able to reach a vehicle and make his escape. Halton police caught up with the suspect moments later, but called off the ensuing car chase for public safety reasons. After losing police, the suspect abandoned his vehicle in the area of Rectory Lane. A short time later, a 63-year-old man was assaulted and had his car stolen in the parking lot of a Dorval Drive apartment complex. The victim received a cut to his face as a result of the assault. Police said the car was driven to Hamilton where Hamilton police spotted the stolen vehi- cle and gave chase before giving up to avoid endangering the public. A short time later, Hamilton police located and arrested a suspect as he attempted to return to his home in Hamilton. Thomas McConville, 29, has been charged with two counts of robbery and several driving related offences. The Halton Regional Police Service is con- tinuing to investigate this incident and anyone with information related to it is asked to con- tact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2204 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
