But Alice Anne LeMay said she sees no need to resign as board chair. LeMay, an Oakville trustee who is by far the longest-serving elected board member with 30 years experi- ence, has been chastised by some members of the public and represen- tatives of some gay-lesbian groups for comments she made to Xtra maga- zine that appeared online last week. In an interview with the gay and lesbian Canadian news source, LeMay, elected to the board chair position in December, said gay- straight alliance student support clubs would not be allowed to operate in Halton Catholic board schools in the same way the board does not endorse or permit certain other groups like Nazis. The remark spurred immediate reaction from those offended by the comparison. The Oakville Beaver received several letters to the editor denouncing LeMays words. On Friday, the Halton Catholic board posted a lengthy clarification of LeMay's remarks on its website (www.hcdsb.org). LeMay has since expressed regret for her choice of words. I do wish to apologize again for the words I used and the way they were interpreted, LeMay said in a Tuesday morning conference call interview, which also involved Catholic board education director Michael Pautler. Thats really not what our board is about. Weve always tried to ensure that the students have a safe environ- ment and are always listened to and always cared for and have a good place to learn and a good place to be. What can I say, thats now in the past and we have to move forward. LeMay said the Xtra reporter did- nt use all her comments in context. I was providing (Xtra) a number of examples of groups that are not endorsed and permitted in Halton Catholic schools, for example groups in favour of abortion or hate groups of any nature..., she states on the Catholic board website. LeMay doesn't believe the Nazi reference should result in her ouster as board chair. I don't think there is a need for that. Everybody who has known me for the past 30 years knows that everybody says things they'd like to take back, but I don't think what I said warrants me not being chair. She said there has been lots of online correspondence from the pub- lic calling for her resignation as board chair, but none of it coming from within the school board. LeMay noted she was going to ask LeMay apologizes but sees no need to resign as chair Alice Ann LeMay Inside Full Delivery: Real Estate, M&M Meats, Liquidation World, West ofthe City, JYSK Bed and Bath, Sure Loc, Atmosphere Sports, Shopping News Partial Delivery: Home Depot, National Sports, Staples, West of the City Opinion............................................6 Auto................................................12 Artscene.........................................15 Sports..............................................17 Classified........................................20 For home delivery & customer service call (905) 845-9742 Mon., Tues. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed., Thu., and Fri. 9 a.m.-7 p.m. (open for calls only after 5 p.m.) Closed Sat. and Sun.
