7 W ednesday , January 12, 2011 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m Letter to the editor Editors Note: This letter was filed with The Oakville Beaver as an open letter to the media on Tuesday, Jan. 11. In the opinion of many persons with expertise and involvement in international military security, nuclear weapons are an increasing and unnecessary danger. The number of nations possessing nuclear weapons has almost doubled in recent years and several other nations have the potential to make them. The signatories of this letter con- sider that it is time to work towards an International Convention for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. We are, therefore, endorsing the campaign being promoted by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights and Physicians for Global Survival to urge the Government of Canada to make working to achieve such a treaty or convention an established, on-going and determined part of Canadian for- eign policy. We encourage all readers to attend the launching meeting of this cam- paign on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Atrium when Mayor Rob Burton will welcome keynote speaker Murray Thomson who, with former Senator Doug Roche and Nobel Peace Prize winner John Polanyi, has gained the endorse- ment of over 500 members of the Order of Canada for a Canada-wide campaign. Songs on the theme of peace will be presented by students from Sheridan College`s Department of the Performing Arts. REVEREND DR. PETER B. A new local campaign to abolish nuclear weapons will be launched at the 24th annual Oakville Concert for Peace, said Mervyn Russell, OCCPEHR chair. The free concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the Oakville Town Hall located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. Nuclear weapons remain the greatest threat to humanity and the envi- ronment. At this free public meeting, Oakville citizens will join with people from around the world to call for a world without nuclear weapons, said Russell in a release announcing the campaigns launch. Murray Thomson of Ottawa is the speaker. Thomson is a member of the Order of Canada, co-founder of the ecumenical peace organization Project Ploughshares and a former executive director of CUSO. Dr. Barbara Birkett is a retired dermatologist who heads up the local chapter of Physicians for Global Survival, which is leading the local campaign with OCCPEHR. You can make a big difference by joining ICAN (www.icanw.org), the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said Birkett, noting ICAN focuses on the roots of the nuclear weapons problem, which is the con- tinued possession of nuclear weapons by a small minority of countries, which risk their use by design, accident, miscalculation or by terrorists, and whose weapons are an incentive to others to also become nuclear armed. Mayor Rob Burton is scheduled to welcome participants to Town Hall and music will be provided by Sheridan Colleges Performing Arts students. To sign the petition and join the Oakville ICAN or for more information, contact OCCPEHR at info@oakvillepeacecentre.org or 905-849-5501.
