They came in second place at the Oxford Cup national debate tournament at the end of November. The competition took place at the Upper Canada College in Toronto. A second White Oaks team, consisting of Henry Choi and Shamir Yusuf, placed in the middle of the pack at the 35-team tourna- ment. Im very proud of the teams. They prac- tice hard regularly, said team co-coach Hamish Guthrie. The Oxford Cup tournament outcomes determine the two-member teams that will head over to Oxford University in England for an international debate competition in March. Canada is sending two teams but only one per province. Because the winning team was from Richmond Hill, the second Canadian team will be the next top-placing team outside of Ontario, leaving Sarraj and Teufel out. However, Guthrie said there is still a hope his two debaters might still go and is waiting for word from the national coach, Tracy Lee, who will take the teams to England. Right after the tournament was over the kids were obviously disappointed at not going to Oxford so they went up and asked Tracy if theres any chance they could go and she immediately said, Yes, there is. Guthrie said that last year, Canada took three teams to England. The Canadian coach wants to take the best Canadian teams that she can and the two Ontario teams, from Richmond Hill and our team, are clearly really strong teams, he added. To get to the national competition, the White Oaks teams competed at a provincial tournament at Queens University, which selected the top five Ontario teams, which went to the nationals. The debate format is called British Parliamentary Style. It consists of four teams debating in a mock proposition to pass or stop a government bill with two teams forming the government and two the opposition. The teams are as such: the open- ing government, including the prime minis- ter and deputy prime minister; opening opposition, which includes a leader and deputy leader; closing government with a member of government (such as an MP) and government whip; and closing opposition with remarks from opposition MP and oppo- sition whip. Competition judges decide the top team in each debate. Guthrie said the team of the Grade 12 Teufel and Grade 11 Sarraj is dedicated to debate. Theyre very gifted and they work very hard. They practice as keenly as any team Ive ever coached. Ive coached debate here at the school for about 30 years, he said. The debate club at the school has about 50 to 60 students. Guthrie said the club gets a good turnout thanks to the reputation it has gained due to its success and there is strong support from the parents and school administration. The team has already participated in a number of tournaments this year. The kids are dedicated enough to enjoy the tournaments.
