Dec. 30, 10 a.m. Richard Bell hockey tourney reaches new all-time high The Richard Bell Memorial Minor Hockey Tournament continues to grow. For the fifth straight year, the Minor Oaks Hockey Associations annual holiday competi- tion for minor-age rep divisions will feature its largest field ever. This years tournament, which begins Dec. 27, will see 142 teams com- peting a slight increase from last years 138- team field, but more than two times the num- ber of participants from 2005. Included in this years mix will be three teams from overseas and four squads from the United States, including a couple entries from the well-respected Detroit Little Caesars organ- ization. They are particular about the tournaments they enter, Richard Bell tournament co-chair Ron Millichamp said of Detroit Little Caesars, whose minor atom AAA team won last months International Silver Stick in Whitby.. They wouldnt enter a tournament where they didnt think there would be good competition. Minor midget teams from Sweden, Norway and Finland will add this years European flavour. Norways Hasle Loeren and Swedens Gota Traneberg will compete in the A division, while Turun Palleoseura of Finland will play in the AA loop. Millichamp and fellow co-chair Dana Harvey were also close to securing a Russian entry for the second straight year, but plans recently fell through. The Siberian team, made up mostly of novice-age players, will instead compete in the novice division of the Golden Horseshoe tournament in Burlington. I said send them to Burlington. That was the right thing to do, Harvey said. The boys should play at their own level. This years tournament will be headquar- tered out of the new Sixteen Mile Sports Complex at Dundas and Neyagawa. The facili- tys four pads of ice also come in handy for Richard Bell organizers, who had to find enough ice to accommodate 329 games in four days. In fact, all 17 ice pads in the town will be used by the Richard Bell tournament on Dec. 28, when all participating teams are scheduled to play twice each. The largest division this year will be in the minor peewee AAA grouping, where 15 teams are slated to compete. The minor atom and minor bantam AAA divisions will both sport 10- team fields. Weve been trying to get more AAA teams, and thats another area where weve made great progress, Millichamp said. Billets have already been arranged for all the European teams but organizers are still wel- coming volunteers, particularly those with tournament experience, to help out around the rinks. Log onto www.moha.on.ca for more infor- mation about the tournament. There is no admission charge to attend any of the games.
