Police point out using handheld devices while driving was the most common viola- tion found during the operation, accounting for 49.35 per cent of the provincial offence notices issued. During the same period Halton police also caught an additional 54 people using hand- held electronic devices while driving in other parts of Oakville outside the operations zone. It is very discouraging that people are still talking on their cellphones, ignoring the law and thus putting themselves at risk as well as drivers around them, said Sgt. Brian Carr, Halton police public affairs officer. Our continued focus on traffic safety will no doubt discourage some offenders in the future. Police said in October there were a total of 36 motor vehicle collisions in Oakville with 28 resulting in only property damage and eight resulting in injuries. In November, there were actually more motor vehicle collisions, totaling 47 42 of which resulted in property damage while five involved injuries. Police said that during November on the days RISC could not be operated, motor vehi- cle collisions occurred while on the days RISC was operating collisions were kept to a minimum. Halton police have made several arrests in con- nection with the Nov. 25 robbery of the Macs Milk on Sixth Line. During that incident four masked suspects entered the convenience store and physically restrained the lone store clerk, while they made off with cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes. These four suspects fled the store in a waiting vehicle and then drove to Mississauga where they robbed a Rabba store as well as the two clerks who were on duty. On Wednesday, Dec. 8, a joint investigation by Halton and Peel police ended with the execution of four search warrants in Toronto. Tola Omar, Mohamed Sheikh-Hussein, Mohamed Abdulle, Hassan Abdulle and Ali Abdi, all from Toronto, have been charged with multiple counts of robbery and other associated criminal charges.
