Marching bands, clowns, cos- tumed characters, as well as corporations, com- munity groups and schools put together some outstanding entries this year that had the audi- ence cheering to A 'Reel Christmas the Movies, this year's Parade theme. A record number of spectators lined the streets of Downtown Oakville and Kerr Village. A special treat this year was to look up just before the parade to see seven planes flying in Christmas Tree Formation. Parade sponsors were invited to participate as judges for the parade and had a difficult time this year because of the high quality of all of the entries. The winners were: Best Overall Entry (Tie) Rosehaven Homes and the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton; Best Corporate Float Rosehaven Homes; Runner Up LIUNA, Ontario Provincial Council; Honourable Mention Foresters Insurance. Best Community Float Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton; Runner Up Walton Memorial United Church; Honourable Mention First Trafalgar Scout Group Best Walking Group Oakville School of Music & Performing Arts; Runner Up Annex Dance Academy; Honourable Mention Fourth Trafalgar Scout Group Best School Float (Tie), White Oaks Secondary School; Oakville Trafalgar Robotics Team; Runner Up T.A. Blakelock Secondary School Best Mascot Santa's Elves (Dirk Soeterik, Roberto Walcott & Brittany) People's Choice Award Walton Memorial United Church; Runner Up Oakville School of Music and Performing Arts. People's Favourite Band - White Oaks Secondary School; Runner Up Top Hat Marching Orchestra Once again, Oakville residents could vote for their choice for best float and, for the first time, their favourite marching band. Walton Memorial United Church, the runner up for Best Community Float with their Who-ville inspired entry, was the winner of the People's Choice Award. White Oaks Secondary School Marching Band, which made its debut in the 2005 Oakville Parade, entertained with their energetic and enthusiastic support for their school's float entry. The Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton featured Pirates of the Caribbean, with a ship full of pirates and Caribbean music. Rosehaven Homes participated for the first time in the parade with its incredible Alice in Wonderland float. These two groups tied for Best Overall Entry. The Oakville School of Music and Performing Arts delighted spectators with its Wizard of Oz theme. A monetary prize of $500 is awarded to the Best Overall Float. This award was determined by the highest overall score. Charitable groups and schools keep the prize money, however; non-charitable groups must donate their prize money to the charity of their choice. This year, two monetary prizes were awarded at the Awards Presentation on Dec. 1 at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall. Rosehaven Homes chose Kerr Street Ministries as its charity, and the Caribbean Association of Halton will be using the money within their organization. Following the Awards Presentation, the theme for the 2011 Parade was chosen, All I Want For Christmas. Oakville charities were also big winners this year as residents were extremely generous with their donations. The Friends and Friends of Falgarwood raised more than $3,500 for Wellspring-Halton. The Kinsmen Club of Oakville was thrilled with the response to the Food Drive this year, collecting more than 7,000 pounds of food and $4,050 to benefit the Salvation Army. The Oakville Professional Fire Fighters also received a record number of toys for their toy drive. Oakville residents showed once again the real spirit of the season is in sharing with others.
