Its been staged and then made into a television movie. Soon it will be a childrens picture book. This Christmas in Oakville, it will come to life in a spirited reading at St. Pauls United Church. According to Rev. Darrow Woods, a minister at St. Pauls, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a favourite Christmas book of Rev. Lexie Chamberlain, also a St. Pauls minister and Woods wife. Its a short novel, first published as a magazine article, and written for children by Barbara Robinson. While the story first appeared in 1972, Chamberlain discovered it on a break from seminary in 1987. Since then, Chamberlain has read the book every December and contin- ued the tradition with her children who, every year, look forward to the story of a church Christmas pageant hijacked by the worst kids in town. Robinson has sold almost a million copies of the book and, according to Woods, received a letter from Chamberlain this year asking if she could host a public reading of the book. In a personal response, Chamberlain received Robinsons blessing. The reading deemed by Darrow as a child-friendly alternative to Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 20. St. Pauls United Church is at 454 Rebecca St. One of the readers will be television news personality Annette Hamm. There will also be music by Melodie Hewer and Trevor Hewer, the Joyful Noise Childrens Choir and Catherine Arcand Pinette. Donations of non-perishable food will be accepted for Fareshare food bank.
