Matthew Mac played a large role in the OAK victory, earning gold in six different events. Mac was first in the 12-year-old boys 50-metre and 100m freestyle, 100m and 200m butterfly and 100m and 200m backstroke. Mack Darragh added gold medals in the 15-16 boys 200m and 400m individ- ual medley, the 100m breaststroke and the 200m butterfly. Darragh also earned silver in two other events. Annie Harrison (15-16 girls 200m backstroke and 400m indi- vidual medley), Hugo Truong (10- and-under boys 100m and 200m breaststroke), Mackenzie Hamill (13-year-old boys 200m freestyle), Tera Van Beilen (17- and-over girls 200m breast- stroke) and Evan White (14-year- old boys 100m breaststroke) were OAKs other individual gold medalists. Erin Assman, Julie Calvert, Sarah Cauvel, Mitchell Gour, Marni Oldershaw, Kent Kikot, Olivia Sinclair and Luka Tomic all won at least one silver medal for OAK. Bronze medals went to Nicole Bullock, Maggie Copland, Annika Grewal, Kristen Olvet, Mika Spencer, Nina Tomic and Connor Wilkins. Four OAK swimmers set indi- vidual club records at the meet. Gour broke his own mark in the 13/14 boys 200m backstroke, reaching the wall in 2:09.14; Mac set a new standard in the 11-12 boys 100m butterfly, fin- ishing in 1:06.22; Van Beilen broke the record in the 17-and- older girls 200m breaststroke, stopping the clock in 2:30.17; and Calvert is the new record-holder in the 17-and-older girls 50m backstroke with a 30.97-second showing. In relay competition, OAK won two gold medals in the 13/14 boys division. The team of Wilkins, White, Gour and Pajovic won the 4x200m medley and set a club record in the process, finishing in 1:55.96. Hamill joined Pajovic, Gour and White to win the 4x200m freestyle. Etobicoke Swimming won the meet, while Toronto Swim Club was third. OAK second overall at Brantford Invitational Not all gold medals won in Lake Placid are mira- cles. The Oakville peewee AE Rangers steamrolled their way to the championship in a recent tournament they played at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, the same venue where the American mens hockey team defeat- ed the Soviet Union in the Miracle on Ice en route to gold at the 1980 Olympics. The only Canadian team in its division, Oakville outscored its opponents by a combined count of 40-3. The Rangers also took the opportunity to visit the bobsled, ski jump and speed skating ovals used for the 1980 Games. Our kids had a great time, played some great hockey and had an Olympic history lesson all in one long weekend, said Rangers coach Nelson Pavao.
