He returned to the same hall- ways Friday, Nov. 12 to talk to cur- rent students about how his rebel- lion changed the film industry and what the world needs from anima- tors. When Steve Williams, who pre- viously worked on Terminator 2, was told by his supervisor on Steven Spielbergs Jurassic Park film project that it was impossible to make the T-Rex entirely with computer animation, the rebel in him kicked in. Williams scanned the most complete tyrannosaurus skeleton in a foreign museum and secretly recreated the scan on the computer. Before long the dinosaur had skin and teeth and was run- ning. When the film producers saw Williams creation they changed the direction of the film production that would consist of all dinosaurs being animated on the computer. If youre not rebellious you cant make a difference, Williams told a packed auditorium. My rebellion made those movies and changed the industry because of what was in there, he said pointing to his head. I was driven. They said no, you cant do it, its impossible. We decreed it as being impossible. Good, thank you so much for decreeing its impossible, you cant do it because Im going to change it. Watch. Thats what I did. Today computer animation appears in nearly every action movie released. One example of it is the recently released Avatar film that drew huge numbers at the box office. Despite his technical achieve- ment, Williams told the students that in order to be successful ani- mators they need to learn the basics of drawing. Technology will not save bad animation or bad knowledge of the world, he said. Williams graduated from the schools classical animation pro- gram in 1984. Back then there was no computer animation program or industry. After graduation he began working at Alias Research in Toronto, which was bought by Animators need to be rebels, Sheridan alumnus says INDUSTRY PIONEER: Steve 'Spaz' Williams speaks to students and faculty at Sheridan College Friday, Nov. 12 about his industry experience.
