These events are annual celebrations for the residents of Oakville and surrounding areas and their families and they draw peo- ple into the downtown to enjoy the events and provide revenue for the downtown shopkeepers. To come to this area for family time at Christmas and then be ticketed for a minor parking infraction smacks of money grab- bing on behalf of the Town. I am sure that the enforcement officers had some idea of why the cars were parked where they were and that the owners would not be long in returning, but they proceed- ed to issue the citations anyway. My son had invited friends to come to the parade with their families and asked them to park on his property at the corner of Wilson and Lakeshore. The streets had, of course, been barricaded for the parade and my sons friend had a difficult time of finding a way to access the parking. My son saw his friend trying to find his way with his vehicle, not a half a block away, and called his cell phone to give him direc- tions. Upon answering his cell, the driver was immediately, and we think quite rudely, accosted by a police officer and told that he would be fined for using his cell phone while in care and control of a vehicle. He was given a fine for $150. Does the Town really need these few dol- lars? Did these families need to have their day spoiled by the present they received from the town for their participation in these community-building events? We think the mayor and his council need to address the issue of holding events to bring the community together and then penalizing them when they do come by issuing parking tickets and fines. There certainly could be instructions given to staff and police on special occa- sions and a moratorium on issuing cita- tions during the hour or two of the special events so that as many families as possible can enjoy the downtown without having to contribute involuntarily to the citys coffers with fines during such annual events.
