By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR HAMILTON The power running of Christ the Kings Hayden Gaskell-Cadwallader and five first-half turnovers were too much to overcome for the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers in yesterdays (Wednesdays) Halton junior football Division 3 final. Gaskell-Cadwallader ran for three touch- downs in the first half as the Jaguars ended Ridges championship hopes with a 21-6 win over the Trailblazers at McMaster Universitys Ron Joyce Stadium. The Trailblazers also coughed the ball up five times in the opening half, the costliest being a fumble on their first possession. Ridge appeared on its way to opening the scoring before turning the ball over inside the Christ the King 20-yard line. Our whole goal was to score first because they hadnt been losing a game all year, Ridge coach Mike Luyks said, referring to the unde- feated Jaguars. If we had scored first, that could have changed everything because they didnt know how to play from behind. Christ the King would go on to take a first- quarter lead on a 23-yard touchdown run by Gaskell-Cadwallader, then padded that advan- tage with 31- and 72-yard scampers for majors by its speedy running back. Gaskell-Cadwallader also kicked the con- vert after each touchdown, meaning he accounted for all the Jaguars scoring in the contest, but the 15-year-old was quick to share the credit after the game. Its all the (offensive) line. They worked hard all season, this game especially, and came up big when they needed to, he said. Thats why I had the success. Ridges other first-half turnovers came on another fumble, two interceptions and being stopped on downs as the Trailblazers entered halftime in a 21-0 hole. Ridge was much better in the second half, containing Gaskell-Cadwallader and the Christ the King running game while narrow- ing the score to 21-6 on a 23-yard touchdown run by Taylor Kurc with 3:56 left in regula- tion. Ridge missed the convert and the Jaguars ran the clock out on their following possession. We put a little more offence together (in the second half), but theyre tough defensive- ly. We didnt have an answer for their blitz, said Luyks. Defensively, Ridge forced a few turnovers of its own. Scott Mackie and James Skoric both intercepted passes, while Andrew Ziebart and Skoric recovered fumbles. Gaskell-Cadwallader was impressed with the fight Ridge put up. The Jaguars ham- mered the Trailblazers 44-6 in the regular-sea- son meeting between the teams. Theyve definitely improved a lot, he said. A lot of credit to them. Ridge went 4-2 during the regular season, then defeated the Aldershot Lions 28-6 and the Lester B. Pearson Patriots 22-8 to reach the final. This was the second straight year Iroquois Ridge has sent a team to the Halton Division 3 championships. The Trailblazers lost the sen- ior final last year to Corpus Christi. 27 Thursday , N ovem ber 25, 2010 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m HOME IMPROVEMENTS Who Does It...
