Donors, volunteers, foundations, small businesses honored on National Philanthropy Day National Philanthropy Day, November 15, is the special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that phi- lanthropy and those people active in the philanthropic com- munity have made to our lives, our communities and our world. 2010 is a very special year, as not only does it mark the 50th anniver- sary of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the chief sponsor of NPD, but its also the 25th anniversary of this special day. We celebrate National Philanthropy Day because of the extraordinary impact of the charita- ble sector and the increasing role it plays in our societies and countries around the world. Billions of dollars are given every year. Millions of pro- grams and services administered to those in needs. Individuals are con- nected to cause, and to each other. Civic participation, and important societal bonds, are created and strengthened through philanthropy as we work to improve the quality of life for all people. In Canada, more than 88,000 charities provide countless services to millions of Canadians, who in turn contribute more than $10 bil- lion annually to those organizations (Canada Revenue Agency). In the United States alone, there are more than 1 million charitable organiza- tions, and Americans give more than $300 billion annually to chari- table causes (Giving USA Foundation). In Latin America and Asia, with governments no longer able to provide enough funding for social services, charitable sectors are growing rapidly and creating pro- grams to meet the needs of their countries citizens. The quality of life for all people everything from education, healthcare, the environ- ment and the arts, to name only a few would be far less if not for these organizations. (NC)How do you make a group of special children those being treat- ed in hospitals during the holiday sea- son smile from coast to coast? It's a task that even Santa might find a bit challenging. But Duracell's Power of Giving program will set out once again this year to do just that, donating thousands of batteries to keep toys and games working for children at 13 hospitals across Canada over the holidays. "It's not easy being at the hospital over the holidays," says Michelle Wilband, coordinator of the Paediatric Medical Day Unit and Specialty Services at Children's Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. "The batteries help keep our toys, games, infant mobiles and other items running for our paedi- atric patients and their families." Last year Duracell made a real difference in our province. It's amaz- ing that something as small as a bat- tery can have such a big impact on our patients and their families, stat- ed Brynn Boback-Lane, president and CEO of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. The Power of Giving program will ensure that hospital shelves across Canada are stocked with batteries. This program is about making sure hospital toys and games have the power to put smiles on faces and helping to provide comfort and per- haps some much needed distraction for young patients and their families during a challenging time, said Victoria Maybee, spokesperson for Duracell Canada.
