On Monday, Nov. 8 nearly 300 pre-schoolers and their parents and caregivers gathered at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre for the Oakville Public Librarys TD Every Child Ready to Read First Concert with Cosima Grunsky. The event was a joint project between Oakville Public Library and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Cosimas musical show was interactive and fun. Using vari- ous instruments throughout her performance, she developed a great rapport with the audience, entertaining both young and old. Children were encouraged to join in dancing and singing and enjoyed the mix of Cosimas tra- ditional and original songs. Some lucky families won tick- ets for upcoming performances at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts during a prize giveaway at the end of the con- cert. The concert, which runs in the fall every year, is aimed at promoting early literacy skills in children through songs, rhymes and singing. The Oakville Public Librarys Every Child Ready to Read campaign aims to ensure children develop the skills they need to read years before they start school. The pre-school pro- grams offered by the library fea- ture many tips for parents and caregivers to engage their chil- dren in early literacy skills. Big thanks go out to TD Canada Trust who sponsored the concert, enabling Oakville Public Library to offer it free to the com- munity and help make it the per- fect first concert for preschool- ers. 27 Friday , N ovem ber 19, 2010 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m Free kids literacy concert a great success READY TO READ: Glen Abbey Recreation Centre was home to the Every Child Ready to Read First Concert with guest performer Cosima Grunsky.
