S. During the past twomonths, two Grade 6classes (6-1, and 6-2) at River Oaks Public School have been writing e-mails to Jeff Alderice, who is a Toronto Metropolitan police officer cur- rently working under the UN in Afghanistan. Jeff is stationed in Kandahar City along with eight other Toronto Metropolitan police officers. They have been there since September and are due to stay until May 2011 so they can help train the Afghan police officers. Our teacher, Miss Philipson organized the e-mail exchange through her brother, Sergeant Graeme Philipson, who is also a Toronto police officer. Jeff and Graeme have been friends for many years. Students making special delivery to Afghanistan Besides e-mailing Jeff and asking many interesting ques- tions, classes 6-1 and 6-2 have also sent Jeff a four-metre long paper flag. The flag has two red sides, and the maple leaf in the cen- tre is made out of real maple leaves found from the autumn trees around Oakville. We wanted Jeff and his friends to see real Canadian autumn leaves because they missed the beautiful fall colours in October. In the white part of the flag, each student made a little badge of hand drawn symbols of Canada. Each symbol was meant to remind the police officers of Canada. Also, one of the students, Kathryn Little, brought in a piano book full of Canadian songs from every province. Each student chose one line from a song from every province, which they thought would remind the police offi- cers of home. Then Kathryn, rearranged the lines to create a new song, which was written all around the perimeter of the flag. The reason for this big craft was because Jeff e-mailed and asked the students to send him and the other Canadian sol- diers something special to remind everyone of home. We worked really hard to finish the flag and send it, so that they will receive the flag before Christmas. But the flag isnt all that we have made. The Grade 6 have also made Christmas cards, letters comparing Afghanistan to Canada, and a video presenting Afghanistan projects on the geography, his- tory, trade, the people, and basic needs. We would like to remember Jeff, the other Toronto police officers, Canadian and American soldiers and Afghan police officers who they work with. We are proud of the work they are doing to improve the lifestyle in Afghanistan and to help give the Afghan children freedom and peace. For Universal Children's Day, Roxy's, Burgers & More, will host a fundraiser as part of the Pride & Joy Campaign for ErinoakKids on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Roxy's Rocks for ErinoakKids will be held at Roxy's, 380 Dundas St. E. (at Trafalgar Road). On Saturday, all proceeds from Roxys Deep-Fried Oreo sales will be donated to ErinoakKids. Additionally, Roxy's is donating 10 per cent of its days sales to the foundation. ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is the largest Children's Treatment Centre (CTC) in Ontario, providing a compre- hensive range of treatment, rehabilitation and support services to approximately 9,000 children with disabilities and their families each year. A highlight of the day will be ErinoakKid's client Christabal Ratnarajah hula hooping 500 times in order to raise $500 for the campaign. The hula hooping will take place from 11 a.m. to noon. Christa was only three years old when she and her family began receiving support from ErinoakKids. Christa's fundrais- ing allows her and her family to give back to ErinoakKids for what it has done for them. Other attractions and events that day include: Joe Drexler running a Be the Bootcamp at 10 a.m.; Argo Cheerleaders hosting a special cheerleading lesson at 2 p.m.; Updos and Tattoos, courtesy of Sharkey's Cuts for Kids, from 1-3 p.m.; an evening of live music, showcasing the local talent of Massive Tank Studios; the Oakville CAA selling dis- count movie tickets; and an all- ages dance party from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will also be a two-day silent auction starting Saturday.
