The Nottinghill Gate high school is getting a major addition, as well as many upgrades and new features. The tentative cost as of May of this year was $17 million all to be covered via funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. At the Nov. 2 meeting of the Halton Catholic District School Board, the boards Superintendent of Facility Management Services Giacomo Corbacio reported approximately 70 per cent of the project has been tendered and based on quotations received to date, the cost estimate is up 15 per cent to $19.5 million. Corbacio said the loss of the summer 2010 construction period due to a delay in receiving a building permit contributed to the extension of the Loyola project completion schedule until the end of August 2012 from December 2011. "The construction work sequence is not as effective in terms of cost and time as is preferred, however, this approach mitigates the impact of this project on students and staff," Corbacio said in his report to trustees. During each phase of construction, areas of the school will be securely barricaded to separate the construction work areas from the rest of the school. The portable classrooms will remain on site until the project is completed. Once the 10- classroom addition is completed the new class- rooms and the portables will be used to accom- modate students and to facilitate the remaining construction phases. Board staff is beginning to develop a commu- nication plan for the community. "The final outcome will certainly be an enhanced and improved learning environment for students and staff," said Corbacio. The major features of the Loyola rebuilding project include: the 10-classroom addition, inter- nal classroom changes and an expansion adding three classrooms, a new prayer chapel, roof, ren- ovated fae, additional parking, lockers, cafete- ria kitchen, an enlarged cafetorium with retractable theatre seating, a larger entrance lobby area, new stage, cosmetology, hospitality, food and nutrition, and dramatic arts rooms, a larger library resource centre, additional com- puter labs, renovated administration and special education areas, upgraded science labs, new staff and work rooms, and upgraded energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Loyola opened in the fall of 1985 at its current site. The school had initially opened in 1981 at the former Georges Vanier senior elementary school behind St. Dominic elementary school on Rebecca Street. At Thanksgiving 1986, Loyola's 940 Grades 10-13 students moved to the new Nottinghill site while its Grade 9s moved from Burlingtons for- mer Elizabeth Gardens School to the Rebecca Street building, until the new Nottinghill build- ing was fully completed the following year.
