Its supposed to be like that. The newly developed report cards for elemen- tary school students are designed to show a stu- dents development of learning skills and work habits during his or her first few weeks of school, as well as a general progress in working towards the achievement of the Ontario curriculum expec- tations. So instead of marks or grades beside the subject field, the report card will have a letter symbol rep- resenting a students development of learning skills. The letters are E for Excellent, G for Good, S for Satisfactory and N for Needs Improvement. Furthermore there will be a three-point scale to indicate the progress toward achieving the cur- riculum expectations. They are progressing very well, progressing well, progressing with difficulty. The progress report cards were developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education. The information on this new elementary progress report card will be a key part of discus- sions with teachers, students and parents/guardians during the November parent-teacher interviews. The focus of these discussions will be on progress early in the school year and how the student, school and the parent/guardian will work together to sup- port student success, said Jeff Blackwell, superin- tendent of education (program) at the Halton District School Board, in a press release. The ear- lier progress report card provides students with time to learn, practice and receive informative feed- back for improvement prior to being evaluated on their achievement in February. There will be three formal reporting periods during the school year. No grades on new report cards
