Blakelock grad nets goalie award Former T.A. Blakelock athlete-of-the-year award winner Kelly Zinkiewich was recently named the goal- keeper of the year in the NCAA womens soccer Horizon League. The senior set Cleveland State University single-sea- son records in shutouts (seven), goals-against average (1.12) and save percentage this season. A four-year starter, Zinkiewich holds school records for saves, shutouts, minutes played and goals-against average. Kelly has been a rock on the back line all season, said Cleveland State head coach Derrek Falor. From the first day of practice in August, she seemed driven to end her career with a great season. Zinkiewich was also one of two Vikings players named to the All-Horizon League first team. Michelle Saunders has enjoyed a terrific start to her university hockey career. The Western Mustangs fresh- man has collected seven points in her first six games, making her the second-highest scoring defence- man in Canadian Interuniversity Sport womens hockey so far. Saunders was recently named Westerns female athlete of the week after collecting four points in two games. Saunders received a life-time athletic achievement trophy from T.A. Blakelock this past spring. Effie Petrou capped her univer- sity field hockey career with one last honour. The Iroquois Ridge grad was named to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all- Canadian first team Wednesday. The midfielder led York University with seven goals and was an Ontario all-star in each of her five years with the Lions. She added another goal in last week's OUA semifinal but York was edged 3-2 by Western, ending the Lions' bid to return to the Canadian champi- onship tournament. Petrou was the Ontario and Canadian university rookie of the year in 2006. Effie is a coachs dream player. She has made tremendous strides in her five years at York University, and this year was no exception, said Lions head coach Deb Fullerton.
