Roman, who has been part of Canadian music for more than 50 years, perhaps best known as the on-air voice of CHUM Radio, will host A Night at Massey Hall. The event, taking place on Nov. 17, will raise funds for SOS Childrens Villages char- ity and features a slew of musicians perform- ing the hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. What were doing here is for family, Roman said of the event. Its a family thing and hopefully, mom and dad will drag (the kids) along and say lets do this as a family. And oldies music is easy to take, danceable and its just classic. Were calling it Rocking Out the Oldies. Roman said the show will feature undis- covered professional and highly-talented amateur musicians performing a 50s-70s themed show. They will be performing very familiar music because most of them dont have their own record that they would be doing, Roman said. The event started with a friend of his, Andrea Iscoe. Iscoe is a mother whos always had a passion for music. Shes somewhat of a closet musician, Roman said. She has the dream all musicians have. Its the old joke about the visitor who comes to New York City and stops a New Yorker and says Hey pal, how do you get to Carnagie Hall? You know what the answer is: prac- tice. This is the Canadian version of that. We dont have the Carnagie Hall, we have Massey Hall. Iscoes dream has been to perform at a concert at a venue such as Torontos Massey Hall. She wanted to figure out a way that she could make this possible and also pay tribute to a dear friend who passed away, Judy Windgold Rosenberg. Windgold Rosenberg, who passed away in 2009, has been involved with the childrens charity with Iscoe, and an image she created is being used as the concert logo. She (Iscoe) went out with her own money and rented Massey Hall and said, I dont care if we get five people, I want to do this thing, Roman said. Then, Iscoe went out clubbing and to bars and spoke with musicians she liked and asked them to perform at Massey Hall. She invited a large group of performers, all of whom are volunteering their time, to do the Mr. CHUM to go on again at Massey Hall benefit concert for the charity. (SOS Childrens Villages) is about provid- ing shelter and family for orphans, orphaned by war or tragic events. They also try to keep siblings together. They operate in 130 coun- tries, Roman said. He added that the organization can help children around the world from being thrown into slave trade, prostitution or from becoming child soldiers. Some of the bands involved in the show will be the long-time Canadian band Little Caesar and the Consuls, the youth band Endurance, an Elvis impersonator and sever- al Juno Award nominees. The show has about 75 volunteers work- ing to put it together, anything from music to composing to providing crew work. Roman said, My plan as the emcee is to basically take people who come to Massey Hall through the journey, basically tell them the story about Andrea and her dream and the charity. Basically, I will set up the times. I was a disc jockey during that period. I know all of the events, the histories, the good stuff, the bad stuff. Roman, a Saskatchewan native, has been a resident of Oakville for the past 18 years. Hes worked with various radio stations until coming to Toronto where he has worked as a broadcaster with 1050 CHUM, CKEY and CKFH. Over the years his roles have changed and hes moved through management positions until he became vice president of digital radio operations at the station and later, from December 2007-April 2008, was appointed the acting head of the CHUM Radio Division for CTV Ltd. He has been a part of other organizations and formed his own record company. Tickets to the concert are $35, $45 and $55. Tickets are available at www.massey- hall.com.
