Kara Lang scored her first goal in international womens soccer play in more than two years Sunday, helping Canada defeat Guyana 8-0 in Canadas second game of the CONCACAF Womens World Cup qualifier. It was the 34th career interna- tional goal for Lang, who was side- lined for close to a year after tear- ing her ACL while playing her final season at UCLA. Canada went on to defeat Mexico 3-0 on Tuesday to win its pool. Canada will face Costa Rica in the semifinals tomorrow (Friday) while the United States and Mexico square off in the other semifinal. The two finalists will earn a spot in the 2011 Womens World Cup in Germany. Peebles an OUA rugby champ Lindsay Peebles scored a try as the Guelph Gryphons routed Queens 54-5 to win its third consec- utive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) rugby championship. The fourth-year flanker also had a try in Guelphs 39-0 victory over McMaster in the semifinals. Guelph, ranked second in Canada behind Lethbridge, went 5- 0 in the regular season and did not allow a single point until its 78-7 quarter-final victory over Western. Bernier an SEC first-teamer Justine Bernier was named to the NCAAs All-Southeastern Conference womens soccer first team Tuesday. The junior goalkeeper posted five shutouts and had a 1.09 goals- against average and made 77 saves in 14 games for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Bernier set new school records for career shutouts (14) and saves (338). Justine continued her develop- ment as a goalkeeper this season by becoming more than just a shot stopper, said Alabama coach Todd Bramble. Her ability to handle crosses and distribution both showed marked improvement this season. Her next challenge will be to continue to grow as a leader as she enters her senior year. Bernier, who represented Canada at the Under-20 World Cup in 2008, is the first Alabama womens soccer player to earn first- team SEC honours since 1999. ECAC honour for Wheeler Kate Wheeler was named the East Coast Athletic Conference womens hockey player of the week. The Oakville native redirected a shot in front of the net with 2:36 to play for her second goal of the game, helping the Quinnipiac University Bobcats earn a 3-3 tie with Boston College, the NCAAs seventh-ranked team. The former Oakville Trafalgar High School athlete of the year has points in five of Quinnipiacs seven games this season. The junior for- ward has already established a career high with five goals and she ranks second on Quinnipac in goals, power- play goals (3) and plus/minus (+7). It is the second ECAC player-of- the-week honour for Wheeler. She also won the award for the first week of October after scoring twice in a 3- 0 win over Niagara and then adding an assist in a 3-1 triumph over Niagara. Wren named top goalie Former Oakville Blades goalie Oliver Wren was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) goalie of the week. Wren, a junior goalie on the Brockport hockey team, stopped 34 of 36 shots in a season-opening 3-1 loss to Utica College. He turned aside 14 shots in each of the first and second periods. Utica scored its final goal into an empty net. First goal for McNicoll Brennan McNicoll, a freshman midfielder, scored his first colle- giate goal Wednesday, giving the Rutgers mens soccer team an early lead. However, the University of South Florida rallied to record a 2- 1 victory. Kadet on all-rookie squad Lauren Kadet was named to the America East all-rookie womens soccer team. The St. Thomas Aquinas grad leads the conference with 6.87 saves per game and is third with an .811 save percentage. Her 103 saves this season was just eight shy of the University of Maryland at Baltimore College rookie record. Kadet twice made 11 saves in a game, including in her collegiate debut against Drexel. She started all 15 games for UMBC and played all but 90 minutes this season. HOME IMPROVEMENTS Who Does It...
