The so few portion of this Winston Churchill quote, which was printed on a banner and hung within the Oakville Conference Centre, seemed slightly out of place Monday as approximately 680 veterans packed the centre for the ninth annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon. Held by MEDIchair Halton, the event drew Second World War and Korean War veterans from Halton Region and beyond. Many veterans brought their families and arrived at the confer- ence centres huge banquet hall wearing their uniforms, adorned with medals and campaign ribbons from conflicts now long over. The event kicked off with a cer- emony of remembrance with a piper playing as a Colour Party car- ried Canadian flags to a podium at the front of the room. This was preceded by a proces- sion of local politicians, uniformed soldiers, past and present, as well as police and even RCMP officers clad in their red dress uniforms. Brendan Browne, principal of St. Vincent School, said creating this kind of connection between the children of Oakville and the children of East Africa is the key reason he is once again visiting St. Bethanys Kids Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya this week. For the past four years the stu- dents at St. Vincent School have raised more than $40,000, includ- ing $10,000 during last years Lent, for the hospital. This week Browne will make a second trip to the hospital so he can report to his students how their donations are helping chil- dren just like them. The hospital has been doing work with kids in East Africa for the past 25 years. They do surger- ies for kids whose parents would otherwise never be able to afford it, said Browne. The hospital was set up to try to support kids with physical dis- abilities to try and allow them to become full members of society.
