Calling all little ghosts and goblins Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, October 24, 2007 7 Dear editor, On Tuesday, Sept. 18 the Halton Catholic District School Board debated whether to allow public health services access to Catholic elemen- tary schools, to conduct a HPV vaccination pro- gram for Grade 8 girls. This medically and provincially approved pro- gram provides these young women with a vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases in females, caused by certain types of genital human papillomarius (HPV). The vaccine protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers and 90 per cent of genital warts. The debate centered not on the issue of medi- cine, but on the belief of some of the board mem- bers that by providing young Catholic women with this vaccine, they were encouraging promis- cuity. This board is not in the position of deciding the medical appropriateness of the vaccine. Apparently some board members feel that these young woman have refrained from pre-mar- ital sex because they were worried about one day developing cervical cancers. I would have thought they were refraining because of the values impart- ed in their Catholic homes, schools and churches. Certain board members clearly have a low opin- ion of the young women and the values education they have received. The research is clear that this vaccine does have a impact on the incidence of HPV. What clearly hasnt been proven is that young women who receive the vaccine are more promiscuous. This boards debate, and the opinions of some of its members, clearly are an insult to young Catholic women and their families. Fortunately in the end, the board narrowly voted to allow the vaccination program to proceed. This beautiful and romantic facility is a wonder of service, organization and courteous person- alities managed by a person who goes beyond the norm when it comes to looking after her clients. Colleen Cauchi, manager Terra Cotta Inn, was the key to the huge success of this wed- ding. From our making of the decision to hold the wedding and reception in the same beauti- ful surroundings, Colleen made it very easy. To each of her staff, including the chef who one rarely sees when eating out you are great. Colleen ran a tight ship and staff enjoyed themselves while making sure we were well looked after. However, every time a bulk pickup is due, some residents are putting these items on the curbside many weeks before the collection date.
