The Canadian team roster was announced publicly on Tuesday, although Flint, who attends Salisbury Prep School in Conneticut, learned on his Oct. 10 birthdate while checking e- mail messages in his school residence that he had made the squad. His parents, Ron and Donna, received a letter at their Georgetown home from the Canadian Lacrosse Association advising them of their sons selection. They quickly had fami- ly friend Marty Cregan scan the letter and sent it to the unsuspecting star midfielder in an e-mail message titled, Happy Birthday from the Cregans. He wasnt sure what it was at first until he checked the attachment, said Ron, whose 19-year-old daughter Naomi plays for New Yorks Potsdam State Universitys girls field lacrosse team. Hes been at school at Salisbury for his past two birthdays so were going down to see him this weekend to cele- brate the good news together. Hes worked really hard to get to this point. A campus visit to the Ivy Leagues Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. is also on the agenda Saturday for Flint, who was in class on Thursday and couldnt be reached for comment. The Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs team MVP in 2006 has been contacted by several top U.S. colleges that are try- ing to recruit him into a Division I pro- gram for next year, with Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. considered among the front-runners. Flint had three goals and 11 assists in 15 games with the Brampton Jr. A Excelsiors as a rookie in 2007, follow- ing that up with a goal and six assists in 14 playoff starts. He was one of 64 hopefuls who attended Team Canadas final selection camp in New Westminster, B.C. on the Thanksgiv- ing weekend and will be the third- youngest player for the red and white when it tries next summer to end the American domination of the tourna- ment since its inception in 1988. The U.S. defeated the Canucks 18- 11 in the 2004 event in Baltimore for its fifth-straight title, although the gap between the two powerhouse countries in field lacrosse appears to be closing after Canada beat their southern neigh- bours in the 2006 senior world cham- pionships. Because theyre in different divisions within Halton Secondary School Athletic Association senior girls basketball, the Georgetown Rebels and Christ the King Jaguars dont meet up during the regular season or playoffs, but they did face each other last week in a one-day tournament hosted by the two local high schools. The host Division II Jaguars managed to upset the Division I Rebels 38-33 in a closely fought matchup and made it to the final, where they lost in overtime to Guelphs St. James by four points.
