Acton/Georgetown, Friday, September 21, 2007 5 Continued from pg. 1 She outlined to the Board several reasons why Mountainview Rd. is dangerous calling it a "busy five lane road the main artery into Georgetown, heavily used by transport trucks traveling up to 80 kph." "Traffic studies have shown that an average of 3,500 vehicles travel through the Argyll and Mountainview intersections during morning rush hour," said Candelora. She also said the speed limit increases in the area, there are no crossing guards at the Mountain- view Rd. inter- sections and ear- lier this year a pedestrian was killed on the road. "The Board has already rec- ognized the dan- gers of Mount- ainview Rd. in exempting the students of G e o r g e t o w n District High School and Centennial Public School...We respectfully ask that you extend the same consideration to the elementary students of Georgetown South and provide busing for all chil- dren who live east of Mountainview," said Candelora who provided the Board with a petition signed by 400 area residents. There were approximately 15 area parents at the meeting along with Councillors Bob Inglis, Jane Fogal, John Duncan, and Mayor Rick Bonnette. At the meeting Tuck Kutarna said the elementary children on the east side should be exempt from the board's transportation policy because of "hazardous walking conditions." To trustees concerned about the one-off policy change she was requesting they could look at the sit- uation again when the board reviews its transporta- tion policy. But in the meantime she said, "let's be safe." "It's not a defence if a child gets hurt to say that we didn't provide busing because we have other busy intersections in the region or we couldn't do it for everybody, so we didn't do it for anybody. We have the opportunity to fix this prob- lem tonight and then get to work on a complete trans- portation poli- cy review over the coming months." On Thurs- day, Tuck Kutarna said she was "de- lighted the chil- dren from Georgetown South will get to school safely as a result of an allocation of an extra bus." Tuck Kutarna's motion passed seven to four. Voting against it were Wards 1&2 Halton Hills Trustee Gerry Ockenden, Board Vice-Chair Janie Hams and Trustee Peggy Russell both from Burlington and Oakville Trustee Philippa Ellis. As well as Tuck Kutarna's motion, the Board also asked for a report back from staff by October 3 on safety priorities, a review of walking distances by Feb. 2008, and a complete review of transportation safety by Feb. 2009. Busing approved for Georgetown South Silver Creek School (X) on Eaton St. is on the far left of the map, while the students in question l ive across Mountainview Rd, on the right side of the map.
