Vosu came across dozens of Monarch butterflies roosting on tree branches. These Monarchs have chosen the Jubilee Woodlot as a resting area on their epic journey to their winter roosting site in the Transvolcanic mountain range of Mexico. Their migration covers a distance of 3,500 km (2,200 miles), averaging 75 kilometres (46 miles) of travel daily, and taking two months to complete the voyage. Local naturalists, Melitta Smole and Kerry Jarvis were busy tagging many of the several hundred Monarchs roosting in the Jubilee Woodlot. Monarchs are tagged to assist researchers in determining their migratory flight pattern, said Smole. The Monarchs that are recovered in Mexico can be traced back to the location where they were tagged. Its a lot of fun tagging Monarchs and you gain a better appreciation of the beauty of these wonderful insects. Its a mir- acle that they can fly from Georgetown to Mexico!
