At 8:30 p.m., 30 minutes after the polls closed, the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall and Conference Centre, where Burton chose to spend the evening, was largely deserted with only a dozen or so supporters chatting amongst themselves or watching the election coverage displayed on a huge movie theatre-style screen at the back of the room. Burton moved back and forth between the banquet hall, where he greeted arriving guests, and a private room where members of his campaign team provided him with the numbers as the polls closed.
