Although this will mark Amos third term as trustee the 51-year- old-mother says her victory this year is just as exciting as her pre- vious two wins. She sees the trustees role in the community as one that involves representing parents and keeping a focus on the stu- dent by ensuring that there are programs that allow all children to succeed. One of the first things that Amos plans on pursuing as trustee is re-implementing the family of schools group that she established in the ward. Im going to start family of schools meetings again so I can make sure that I know what is happening in the community. Im going to be out talking to the par- ents and making sure that com- munication is a focus, said Amos. Renkema was Amos only com- petitor for the position. Ann Harvey Hope Harvey Hope received 2,084 votes to finish on top of the Ward 3 trustee race. Harvey Hope, who has been attending public school board meetings for more than seven years as an observer, said she is happy with the election win and is looking forward to working with the children. Im going to change where I sit in the boardroom and continue doing a lot of what I was doing before, which was advocating for children in the entire ward, she said. The chartered accountants competitors were Georgette Bolger, 1,619 votes, Jeffrey Percival, 1,333 votes and Sherif Guorgui, 198 votes. Kathryn Bateman-Olmstead With 3,568 votes, Bateman- Olmstead beat out candidates Jennifer Poirier (2,913 votes) and Aman Jaspal (943 votes) to secure herself a second term as Ward 4 trustee. Bateman-Olmstead is pleased with the results, adding that her win in this municipal election feels much different than the pre- vious one. I know what to expect now. Last time I was brand new. This time I know what Im going to be doing tomorrow and for the next four years, she said. It takes a long time to learn and to really feel comfortable in the role. The board is a huge employer and a huge organization and so it takes a while to get settled in and understand how it works. Im really excited to be given an opportunity to continue doing the good work, added Bateman- Olmstead. The 51-year-old, stay-at-home mother said she plans to continue promoting equal, diversified qual- ity education, accommodation of students, accountability and transparency. To address the communitys needs, Bateman-Olmstead is also requesting that people contact her with their top three priorities. You can reach Olmstead at kathryn4kids@cogeco.ca. Ward 1/2 incumbent Don Vrooman was acclaimed. By Hiba Kesibi SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The three newly elected Halton District School Board trustees had a relatively easy vic- tory over their competitors dur- ing Mondays municipal election. Kelly Amos, Ward 5 and 6, Ann Harvey Hope, Ward 3 and Kathryn Bateman-Olmstead, Ward 4, have been elected to rep- resent Oakville at the HDSB. Kelly Amos Earning more than double the votes that competitor Debbie Renkema received, its clear that Ward 5 and 6 residents wanted Amos back as their school trustee. Amos, who lost the 2006 elec- tion to Bruce Jones by less than 170 votes, said she is excited to take on the role of trustee again. Im thrilled, Im excited, Im so happy that the people are sup- porting me to come back and be trustee to represent them, she said Monday night. Im very thankful for all my Two new Oakville faces on public school board Kathryn Bateman-Olmstead Ann Harvey Hope Kelly Amos
