He went out the one side (of the Jeep) and I went out the other into a ditch. Beyond that Izatt said he just took the campaign in Holland and the rest of the war one day at a time. You were just on the go all the time, he said. It was just a matter of fighting your way on through. You lose a lot of buddies. At the time Canada helped chase the Germans out of the bulk of Italy and Normandy before heading into the Netherlands, where around 200,000 Canadians partici- pated in that country's liber- ation. As the Canadian and Allied Forces fought their way into the Netherlands, behind the lines the Dutch people were, and had been, suffering. Food supplies had been cut off and a harsh winter dubbed the Hongerwinter (Hunger Winter) led to a famine that killed approxi- mately 20,000 people. Meanwhile, as the Nazis were persecuting the Jews, 100,000 Dutch Jews, of a pre- war population of 140,000, would perish. Today Canadian soldiers, both the past and present, who venture into the Netherlands are treated as heroes. Izatt had a long history in Oakville and remained active in the community. Last spring, he was on hand for the celebration that marked the closure of Brantwood Public School, which he attended from 1924-28. Visitation for Izatt was held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home yesterday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Kopriva Chapel located at 64 Lakeshore Rd. W. (905-844- 2600). The service will be immediately followed by a reception and later move to Springcreek Cemetery in Clarkson. In lieu of flowers, memo- rial contributions may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre or the Kidney Foundation of Ontario. E- mail condolences may be made through www.kopri- vataylor.com. with files from David Lea Continued from page 10 You were just on the go all the time.
