Izatt, 93, is survived by his wife of 70 years, Velma. He was a nice guy, said long-time friend Arnold Manders, who first came to know Izatt more than five decades ago when Izatt was employed by the former Monsanto in Oakville. In fact, Manders called upon Izatt, who was a private in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during the war, to present a memorial poster to New Central Public School in May 2008 about the Canadian liberation of the Netherlands. Izatt and Manders, who himself moved from the Netherlands to Canada at age 19, lived in Oakville more than 50 years and belonged to the local Legion. Archie had something, but he wasnt sick. Just 14 days ago he was at fish fry, said Manders. On his 90th birthday, Izatts family invited friends and fami- ly to drop by the Bronte Legion and help celebrate the mile- stone. Izatts name is on the Town of Oakvilles World War II Honour Roll. Izatt, who made his home with his wife in Olde Oakville, is survived by his sons Harold and Don, and daughters Lori (Mills), Lynn (Rees). He was predeceased by his daughter Carol (Evans). Izatt had 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. It was children that Izatt was called upon to reach with the recounting of what it was like in wartime and the role Canada played in liberating the Netherlands from Nazi oppression when the poster documenting Canadian cemeteries in the Netherlands and Belgium was presented in May 2008 to New Central Public School. Izatt was on hand to speak about May 5, 1945 when the Canadian army and other Allied Forces drove German occupiers from Dutch soil at the close of the Second World War. The effort came at the cost of approximately 7,600 Canadian lives. Some 60 years later, Izatt continued to hold onto heart- pounding memories of his experiences, which include being strafed by an enemy plane.
