I couldnt be happier obviously. I declared my candidacy four months ago and every day I have just been reminded of what an amazing community we live in, said Gittings. Congratulations to Nick (Hutchins) and Mary for putting their names out there. The one thing that I have learned is that all the can- didates deserve our thanks for their desire to ensure that Oakville remains the most livable town in Canada and I am looking so forward to working with the residents of Ward 3. When reached for comment via e-mail Chapin responded with the following state- ment: I sincerely appreciate my supporters, and have enjoyed the experience representing Ward 3 interests at Town Council for the past four years. Roger Lapworth is entering his second term as Oakville Town councillor for Ward 4 after a tight race in the municipal election. Lapworth received 39 per cent of the vote and was followed closely by Brian Burton and Susan Sheppard. I feel relieved that I retained my seat and relieved that Mayor Burton retained his, too, he said. The electorate is telling us were head- ed in the right direction and they want us to continue. Lapworth plans to tackle election signs when the new term begins. He said signs are costly and its a time-con- suming effort to repair the damage caused to the signs by the wind. Marc Grant had only one challenger for his Ward 5 Town Council seat and resoundly beat out Mark Straub. This means he will serve his third term on Oakville town council. Its been a really great experience just reconnecting with people and hearing back from people whom Ive helped before. It kind of showed me that Ive been on the right path, he said. I got involved because I wanted to help my neighbours, I wanted to help my communi- ty and certainly its been shown that a lot of people agree that Ive done that. Grant said in the coming term he wants to curb vandalism in Oakville. As Oakville grows were finding that we need to do more to protect homeowners and also engage people, he said. He added the town engages youths very well between six and 11 and those 20 and older, but there is not much for those in between to do. He said he wants to create more things to do for youths and to take a harder stance against those who con- tinue destroying property. Jeff Knoll will serve Oakville for a fourth consecutive term after he received over- whelming support at the polls to defeat chal- lenger Bruce Jones for Ward 5 Town and Regional council seat. Im tired, but Im elated at the opportuni- ty to serve another four years and Im absolutely thrilled and humbled by the 75 per cent of my constituents, who gave me a solid mandate to go forward with my work and represent them, he said. Like some of his colleagues on council, Knoll said he wants to work to ban or restrict the use of campaign signage on public prop- erties saying it was out of control during this election. On a more long-term plan, Knoll wants to create more affordable housing opportunities for Halton residents, create facilities for youths and to ensure the town gets good value for the money it spends. Max Khan will also be returning for the next term of council having defeated Janice Wright, Tom Altobello, Ross Bragdon and Jim Smith in the race for the Ward 6 Town coun- cil seat. I feel great, I feel relieved, Im going to finally get some sleep. Its been a tough, tough campaign, but its all over and Im real- ly, really pleased the residents have trusted me again to go another four years, said Khan. I was running up against partisan poli- tics. I was running up against developers. I was running up against special interest groups, but I had that one thing on my side and that was the residents. There was a lot of hoopla about party affiliations, but residents dont necessarily have an affiliation to a party. They put their family first and if they find a candidate who can deliver for their family thats who they are going to pick. Im really, really pleased and Im honoured that I have another four years to serve my community. Tom Adams defeated Doug MacKenzie for the Ward 6 Town and Regional council seat. Im very overjoyed by the results in northeast Oakville. I think we got the results we were looking for, said Adams. People understood the message I was bringing around about controlling growth and making sure that we control the vision of Oakville instead of others. That is what they chose and if you look at whats happened around the rest of Oakville you see the exist- ing council largely being returned and I think that shows a clear preference for the kind of work weve been doing, controlling the vision of Oakville internally instead of letting the development community dictate that. Mary Chapin Halloween Caper car rally A Halloween Caper Car Rally on Saturday, Oct. 30 is destined to put you in the mood for Halloween. The Zonta Club of Oakville is staging the fundraiser for its efforts to support womens health and support services in Oakville and Halton.
