Well, you can turn that hobby into something that can land you with an award from Mayor Rob Burton, a spot at an exhibit and a new laptop computer. The Oakville Camera Club (OCC) is hosting its fourth annual photography competition with new prizes this year, including the mayors award. These three develop- ments will make Capture Oakville more exciting than ever, said the clubs presi- A pair of Oakville artists is exhibiting together at the historic Sovereign House showcasing their pottery and painting work. Potter Marguerite Broten and painter Don Morrisons autumn show begins Saturday, Oct. 9. Sovereign House is oper- ated by the Bronte Historical Society. The show continues through Sunday, Oct. 17, which coincides with the societys celebration of Trafalgar Day. Sovereign House is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 p.m., but will be closed this Sunday due to Thanksgiving. Broten makes her pot- tery creations by hand or on potters wheel. Her work includes functional sets. Morrison works with watercolours, painting land- scapes of Canadas nature. Sovereign House is located at 7 West River St. dent Kieley Kitagawa. Having Rob Burton present the first annual Mayors Award adds a lot of prestige to this event as we celebrate all that is Oakville through the art of photography. The sponsor of the first Mayors Award of Excellence for Photography is Oakville-based MDG Computers, which will present a laptop to the winner of the award. New categories for Capture Oakville 2010 include Futuristic, Colour, Monochrome, Portraits, Beauty, Open and for students only. All entries must be printed on 11x14 photo paper suitable for framing. The top 80 images will be displayed in the North Atrium of Oakville Town Hall starting Nov. 12, the date of the opening night gala. The contest is administered by the camera club, which is open to everyone in Oakville and surrounding areas. Submission deadline is Oct. 10. Entry drop-off locations include Burlington Camera, CPS Inkworks, Henrys at Dorval Crossing and Visteks Mississauga location, as well as regular OCC meetings. An Oakville-based pop- rock all-girl band is set to head east to perform at this years Indie Week music fes- tival in Toronto. Daisy Chain will perform at The Bovine on Saturday, Oct. 16. The bands lead vocalist will do a solo show at the Freetimes Cafn Thursday, Oct. 14. Band members are Oakvilles 20-year-old gui- tarist and lead vocalist Elora Taylor and 18-year-old bassist and backup vocalist Diana Filc. The Halton Region Museums fall jazz concert series continues Oct. 10 with a performance by the Fern Lindzon Duo. The performance will take place from 2-4 p.m. in the Hearth Room of the museums Alexander Barn. Proceeds from the event will go to the Halton Museum Foundation, which supports the muse- ums capital renovation campaign. Lindzon is a Toronto pianist and vocalist. She won for vocal group of the year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards with the Sisters of Sheynville. The Halton Region Museum, located in Kelso Conservation Area, is one of Haltons greatest treas- ures, especially at this time of year, said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, in a press release. This Thanksgiving weekend is a great opportunity to enjoy a fabulous musical performance in a unique historic setting. The conservation area is located in Milton.
