MICHELLE SIU / OAKVILLE BEAVER Connecting the community Home Suite Hope is host-ing its fourth annualEmpty Bowls event on Sunday, Oct. 17 from noon-3 p.m. at Appleby College. The event draws hundreds of attendees all in pursuit of the perfect handcrafted bowl in which to taste delicious soups from the 15 restaurants and caterers that will provide soups for the event. The handcrafted and painted bowl is included in the $50 ticket price and attendees get to take the bowl home with them after the event. Choosing the bowl has become an event highlight. So where do they come from? Pottery supplies are provided from sponsor organiza- tions such as the Pottery Supply House. Bowls are then made at Crack Pot Studio, a Bronze Spoon Sponsor. Crack Pot Studios owner Wilma Spence leads a team of skilled artisans who assist members of the community to make bowls over the course of the year. Under the tal- ented team of Michele Broad, Leslie Clark, Emma McIntosh and Cathleen Nicholson, indi- viduals from the community have made over 900 bowls this past year. Many organizations and companies have found making the bowls is a great way to have fun and build team spirit. After the bowls are fired, the painting begins. Painting has been done by community organi- zations such as the May Court Club of Oakville, Visual Arts Mississauga and the Oakville Art Society. Artisans from the OAS include Nazila Boulourian, Susan Brown, Susan Cunningham, Bill Goode, Rhonda Thibodeau and Zarine Unwalla. Children and youth painters have come from Appleby College, Camp Manitou, Iroquois Ridge High School, Muskoka Woods Camp, Oakville Trafalgar High School, St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School and New Central Public School. Independent potters and artisans have also added to the pottery talent pool. These artists have included Christine Duncan, Gay Longo, Theresa Ottoni and Nancy Redwood. Tickets to Empty Bowls cost $50 and include a $25 charitable donation that goes directly to Home Suite Hopes work in providing transitional housing and outreach services to individuals and families in Halton that are facing homelessness or a housing crisis.
