By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF When a man was suffering one of the most critical situations of his life, Oakvilles Ibrahim Shah just let his train- ing take over in a bid to save the victims life. The 20-year-old St. John Ambulance Medical First Response volunteer was on a flight back home from his sisters wed- ding in Pakistan when a fellow passenger aboard the plane suddenly collapsed. When the announcement for help was made, Shah immediately stepped forward to attend to the 85-year-old victim with a heart condition. The elderly man was unresponsive and had weak and unstable vital signs. Shahs quick response and decision- making ended up saving the mans life. It feels rewarding to be able to be in a position to help save someones life, but I think at that point, essentially, the train- ing takes over, Shah said. He added that through his training he has a regimental list in his head of things to do in an emergency situation and he just worked down the list, one by one. FURNACE TUNE UP SPECIAL! Ibrahim Shah, St. John Ambulance medical First Response volunteer By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The fight to stop the 900-megawatt power plant in southeast Oakville must begin with the community using its voice to challenge those in power, said envi- ronmental activist Erin Brockovich. I encourage communi- ties to be aware. Educate yourselves. Awareness is key, she told her audience at a $125-a-plate lunch at Velux Canadas Oakville office on Friday. The night before she spoke at a private $150-a- plate dinner at Appleby College. Both events were presented by Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) to raise funds and awareness for the organization to help it stop the construction of the gas- fired power plant proposed at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. Brockovich is best known for creating a legal case against a utility company in California after a communitys drinking water became contaminated with a toxic substance that poisoned area residents. The case was made famous by a 2000 film, titled Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts. The 50-year-old currently runs a consulting firm that focuses on personal injury claims brought on by asbestos exposure. She is also a paid public speaker whose fee is usually about $25,000.
