Bernier shining in goal for Crimson Tide Oakvilles Justine Bernier was recently named the Southeast Conferences defensive player of the week. The junior goalkeeper returned from a national team training camp to lead the Alabama Crimson Tide womens soccer team to back-to-back victories, both by shutout, as the team opened its SEC schedule. Bernier made nine saves as Alabama defeated Mississippi 2-0, the schools first win over the Rebels in six years. On Sunday she made eight saves against Mississippi State in a 2-0 victory, improving her record to 5-0 and lowering her goals-against average to 0.20. Overall, the Crimson Tide is 7-2 this season. While shes capable of keeping us in games single- handedly, she is doing more right now by making us a better defensive team through her communication and organization, said Alabama coach Todd Bramble. With four shutouts this season, she has become the all-time Alabama leader with 13 in her career. She is also closing in on Alabamas all-time record for career saves (301). Bernier needs to stop only 10 shots to eclipse that mark. It is the third career conference player of the week honour for the Loyola grad, who led the SEC in saves per game (6.44) last season and was named to the all-SEC second team. Kadet posts first NCAA shutout In other NCAA womens soccer news involving local residents, freshman goalie Lauren Kadet notched her first collegiate shutout as the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers defeated Vermont 2-0 Sunday to open America East conference play. Kadet, a St. Thomas Aquinas grad, made eight saves to become the first Retrievers freshman to post a shutout since October 2005. Its never easy to go on the road and get results, especially in the conference, said UMBC coach Alyssa Radu. We attacked and created really well and for 90 minutes our defensive line and our keeper were solid. Justine Bernier Lauren Kadet
