Appleby College, site sponsor since the first Empty Bowls event in 2007, provides a beauti- ful venue, and faculty, staff and students have also provided vol- unteer support every year. This years event will run from noon to 3 p.m. at Appleby. Marg Hagey, assistant head of school, co-cur- ricular programs, is the Appleby liaison and a member of the Empty Bowls planning commit- tee, which is comprised of a group of highly committed volunteers under committee chair Cari MacLean. The strong Empty Bowls volunteer commit- tee structure is a legacy of Wendy Perkins, HSHs founding executive director. Under MacLeans leadership, the Empty Bowls event is completely volunteer driven. Soup providers are sourced by the soup committee of Deb Marks, Lorraine Yates and Viviana Smith. Sixteen restaurants and caterers will provide delicious soups at this years event. Joanne Peters is in charge of pottery bowls. This year, she has co-ordinated the making and painting of 900 bowls with the help of numerous volunteers including children and youths from Appleby College, Camp Manitou, Iroquois Ridge High School, Muskoka Woods Camp, Oakville Trafalgar High School and St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School. Eveline Dear, HSHs May Court Club of Oakville board rep- resentative, and community vol- unteer Nigel Kettle lead the sponsorship team, and liaise with event sponsors including Longos, Royal Bank, Campbells Soup, UPS, Oakville Beaver, Cobs, The Taylor Group, Renaissance Homes, Crackpot Studio and Whole Foods. The ticket sales committee is led by Glen Herring, also a member of HSHs volunteer board of directors. Tickets to the event cost $50 and include a $25 charitable donation that goes directly to Home Suite Hopes work in providing transi- tional housing and outreach services to individ- uals and families in Halton facing homelessness or a housing crisis. Empty Bowls is volunteerism at its best, says current HSH Executive Director Janice Moro.
