There will be a barbecue thanks to M&M Meat Shops hot dogs and hamburgers will be available for $2 free snacks for the movie and a cooked breakfast provided for participants. Broome said the event owes a debt of grat- itude to the Rotary Club of Oakville West for its sponsorship as well as to Encore Cinemas. All money raised from the event will go to the Salvation Army in support of the Lighthouse. It's our hope in holding this event to have a fun night, which will raise awareness of the issues facing homeless people in Oakville/Halton and the work of the Halton Salvation Army Lighthouse in general, said Ward 5 Councillor Marc Grant who works weekends at the shelter. The event will be held near the main park- ing area of Coronation Park. The area will be near the lake and parking, but also the play areas and washroom facilities. According to Broome, everyone is wel- come. Families are encouraged to partici- pate. Anyone under age 18 must be accompa- nied by an adult. To register, visit www.sleepinthepark.com or e-mail Broome at Wendy_Broome@can.salvationarmy.org. Earlier this year, the Salvation Army opened the doors to its Halton Lighthouse shelter in Oakville to spotlight local and national homelessness. According to the Salvation Army, 584 peo- ple, mostly from Oakville and Burlington, used the Lighthouse last year (2009). The shelter provides people over 16 years of age, with up to 30 days of accommodation, free of charge, while they try to find a home. When the Lighthouse first came to Oakville, there was resident opposition to locating a shelter in local neighbourhoods and it was believed Oakville didnt need a shelter. The Salvation Army operates some 450 shelters in Canada. According to a Salvation Army survey, one in nine Canadians, or 3 mil- lion people, have either experienced or come close to experiencing homelessness in their lifetime. Clients at the Lighthouse can stay for 30 days, unless they are asked to leave usual- ly it would be a result of violence. They receive food and can access resources to search for work. To be admitted, clients need a referral from Halton Region. The shelter is funded 62 per cent by Halton Region while the remainder of its operating costs come from donations, grants and partners.
