By Erin Homer, GRADE 9, KINGS CHRISTIAN COLLEGIATE The prospect of highschool can at times bean intimidating topic for me. When I think about the years that now lie ahead, I see them as long, hard, and for lack of a better word, impossible. I heard a lot of peoples opinions over the summer about high school, and although there were some good descriptions, the one that sticks out the most right now is: High school is hard. Now, Im definitely not an expert on high school (considering Ive never gone through it), but I think that experiences like high school depend a lot on your attitude. You see, if you go into it with a negative outlook on everything, itll be hard to see the bright, positive sides. Mastering this way of thinking has been a huge goal for me this summer because I know it will ben- efit me in high school. Clearly academics arent the main target of my excitement. This enthusiasm is also triggered by the fact that I will spend the next year in a very big school environ- ment. I love to meet new peo- ple, and moving on to high school gives me this very opportunity. I am also looking for- ward to an all-girls gym class; this is going to be very different, but Im extremely thrilled to try and experience the new things that high school holds. At the beginning of this summer, I couldnt wait to relax and be lazy, but indulging in this for two months, I was anticipating the first day of school. Dont get me wrong, I was nervous to start high school, but there comes a time when its good to get back to work. It also seems, that my brain switched into school mode, because I began having the urge to do homework. Of course I realize that by the end of this year, I will want just the same thing I wanted at the beginning of this summer, but I think thats one of the very interesting things about school. Hopefully this cycle will be seen in other mat- ters as well; since Im a lit- tle nervous for high school, I hope that by the end of this year, I will have a completely different state of mind, so I wont be quite so tense the fol- lowing year. While I am excited, there is always a part of me that has a hard time grow- ing up. Its a really big deal to me when I realize that a lot of time has passed, and so at the same time, I feel like I didnt experience things to their full extent. If I were to give advice to someone in elementary school I wouldnt only tell them to try their best in school, but also to cherish the moments they have, because then maybe time wont catch them quite as off guard. With this bit of advice, I also just want to wish all the new grade nines out there luck in their first year in high school. In another persons words: Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. Move to high school is a great opportunity
