The article, which was written by Oakville Beaver staff writer David Lea in January of 2009, was recognized at the 2010 Crime Stoppers International Training Conference in Halifax, N.S., in late August. The story detailed the personal experience of Diane Clemons, wife of Argo football coach Michael Pinball Clemons, who lost her sister to an abusive relationship. The article also unveiled a new initiative in the Halton Regional Police Service and Halton Crime Stoppers program to take tips from people who become aware of individuals who are victims of domestic abuse. Callers do not have to give their names, but the informa- tion they provide is passed on to the Halton Regional Police Domestic Violence Investigation Unit who work with the victims to get whatever help may be required. Traditionally, Crime Stoppers takes anonymous tips on unsolved crimes, but expanded this program to include domes- tic violence cases after studies indicated these types of situa- tions can escalate to the point where victims are in danger of being injured in an assault or even murdered.
