Mulvale went on to attack Oakvilles current leadership over a number of issues from the $200 mil- lion local share the Town is preparing to shell out for the new Oakville hos- pital, the handling of the 900- megawatt gas-fired power plant, pro- posed for 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., to excessive Town spending and the sti- fling of debate within Town council. On the hospital issue, Mulvale said that while she agrees Oakville needs a new hospital, it is unfair for the Town to agree to make a $200 million com- mitment to the hospital at the taxpay- ers expense. She said this is particularly true for residents who purchased their homes when the provincial legislation for development charges included a pro- vision for the community share for hospitals because they have essentially already paid for the hospital once. This Council is asking you to pay twice, driving up your property taxes each year you continue to live in Oakville. Now I ask you, is that what you call liveable? asked Mulvale. I pledge to you tonight to make the re-introduction of the communi- ty share for our hospital in the Provinces development charge legis- lation the issue in the lead-up to, and during, the 2011 provincial election. Mulvale went on to say the incum- bent failed to make the community share for hospitals an issue during the 2007 provincial election. She also said the increase to resi- dential development charges, which would come as a result of absorbing the community share, would have lit- tle negative impact as new homebuy- ers would not mind an extra $300- $500 on a $400,000 purchase, partic- ularly when they get a hospital for it. On the issue of the power plant, Mulvale stated she would make every effort to get it moved away from its cur- rent location, which is less than 400 metres from the nearest residential area, and said that had she been mayor, more would have been done to stop the Province from choosing that site. Faced with that, I would have con- sulted immediately with Ward 3 Councillor Keith Bird, who for nearly 30 years has served the people of that ward, plus I would have gone to exist- ing residents groups and I would have consulted with Mayor Hazel (McCallion of Mississauga), said Mulvale. I have no ego that precludes me from going to people and asking for valuable insight if it helps mobilize to fight, and fight successfully, for Oakville. I would have immediately engaged a wide, informed group of people, elected and non-elected, and we would have put together a fact- based inclusive strategy to show the provincial government and their offi- cials the clear error of their ways.
