Its back to nature for three local artists who are putting on a show at Oakvilles historic Sovereign House. The exhibit, titled Stone Sand Sea, opens Saturday, Sept 11 and runs until Sept. 22. It features works from the artists Lyn Estall, Dan Monaghan and Andrea Seibt. The show will feature more than 35 works from the three artists. Estall will show a series of acrylic, encaustic and mixed-media paintings as well as jewelry designs. Seibt is a marine biologist and artist who shows her vision of marine life through acrylic and mixed-media paintings. Furthermore, she uses art as a vehicle for raising awareness and funds for organizations dedicated to protecting the worlds oceans. The third artist, Dan Monaghan, is a sculptor who designed the Toronto International Film Festivals 2009 awards. He studied under aboriginal soapstone artist Ben Henry. The show will feature the works of teachers at the school board, hosted by ArtWorks Oakville. An opening reception is taking place on opening day from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will be at Town Halls North Atrium until Oct. 7. Town Hall is located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. The Oakville Galleries will be presenting a new exhibit, titled Diabolique, at its two loca- tions, which opens Saturday, Sept. 18. The exhibit is the work of 21 artists who show, through their work, the impact of war, violence and human conflict on contemporary life. The exhibit features a mix of dark scenes and evocative narratives and the works pose questions about the human capacity for vio- lence. According to organizers, Diabolique evokes contemplation of social and political crises both locally and abroad through its representation of anxiety, hope and struggles, banalities and birthrights, and sublime truths and harsh real- ities. The exhibit was curated by Amanda Cachia and was organized and circulated by the Dunlop Art Gallery. Diabolique features works by Bogdan Achimescu, Matilda Aslizadeh, Rebecca Belmore, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Dana Claxton, Douglas Coupland, Mario Doucette, David Garneau, William Kentridge, Wanda Koop, Fawad Khan, Emanuel Licha, Shirin Neshat, Michael Patterson-Carver, Dan Perjovschi, Raymond Pettibon, Nancy Spero, Althea Thauberger, Jason Thiry, Scott Waters and Balint Zsako. A double-opening reception takes place on Sunday, Sept. 19. The first is at the galleries Centennial Square location, 120 Navy St., from 2:30-3:30 p.m., followed by the continuation at the Gairloch Gardens location, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. War, violence and conflict at art exhibit Teachers show art at Oakville Town Hall Art lovers can visit four galleries by simply hopping on one bus. The ARTbus tour takes place on Sunday, Sept. 19 with a visit to two Mississauga and two Oakville gallery locations. The bus has an 11:30 a.m. pick up at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD), 100 McCaul St. in Toronto, and will drop people off at OCAD at 5:30 p.m. The bus will visit the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the University of Toronto Mississaugas Blackwood Gallery and then head over to Oakville. In town the bus will stop at the Oakville Galleries two locations at Centennial Square and Gairloch Gardens. Bus tour tickets are $10 and include refresh- ments. Bus tour to visit Oakville Galleries and GTA exhibits The Oakville Choral Society will begin its rehearsals for the upcoming season on Tuesday, Sept. 14 and is welcoming new members. The group is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and plans to put on a series of concerts of some well known and beloved choral music this year, including the Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach, at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The choir consists of approximately 80 members and rehearses Tuesday nights from September to May. No audition is required for those who are interested but musical knowledge is helpful. There is annual fee of $150, and it includes free music loans from the choirs library.
