Shaarei-Beth El congregation is holding an open house on Sunday, Sept. 12 to show people its religious school. Families will be able to meet others, the rabbi and the director of education. The open house starts at 11 a.m. and at noon there will be a barbecue lunch to celebrate the Jewish New Year, which this year landed on the night of Sept. 8, and continues through the Day of Atonement, also known as Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown on Sept. 17. Weve been in Oakville for 55 years, but there are many in this com- munity who dont know we are here, said Rabbi Wise, in a press release. Its the rabbis fourth year with the con- gregation. We want to open our doors to the community to see what our synagogue has to offer. Birding expert Bridget Stutchbury, author of The Bird Detective: Investigating the Secret Lives of Birds, will be speaking in Oakville Thursday, Sept. 16 about the peculiar ways of birds. Stutchbury is a professor of biology at York University and is an internationally-recognized birding expert. She works to pre- serve bird habitats and is affiliated with more than a dozen organiza- tions including Wildlife Preservation Canada and the World Wildlife Fund. In her latest book she reveals some of the reasons behind the strange behaviour of birds, their colour, songs and habits. The event is hosted by the Canadian Club of Halton Peel and takes place at the Oakville Conference Centre, located at 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Registration and cash bar open at 6 p.m. and dinner starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 for the clubs members, $40 for non-members and $15 for students. Toastmasters talk of the town today The Oakville Toastmasters Club has announced that Mayor Rob Burton will officially pro- claim October as Toastmaster Month for the Town of Oakville. October is the Toastmaster Month, however, the proclama- tion is being made today at the Quality Inn, located at 754 Bronte Rd. The event will also be a kick off for the Toastmaster fall season. Burton will read the proclamation and with him will be the Town Crier Chris Pederson-Brown, who will announce the mayor, along with the executive members of the club.
